Bekhorot 38 begins by struggling to identify the exact measure implied by a hole and by defending that reading through a complex comparison between earthenware and other vessels. The Gemara repeatedly narrows its claims: from Torah law to rabbinic liquid impurity, from general comparison to a hekker-based analogy, and from broad language to locally fixed measures. On 38b the focus shifts to eye blemishes, where apparent contradictions are resolved by distinguishing black from white areas of the eye, tannaitic disputes are preserved, and procedural trust about who may identify a blemish is examined. The final sugya on permanent whitening and “waters” uses textual repair and seasonal clarification, but ends with a real unanswered question. Across both amudim, the daf advances by testing categories and refusing to oversimplify.

Bekhorot 37 begins by limiting who may participate in releasing vows and why a special ruling was needed against Rabbi Yosei. It then weighs the financial consequences of selling forbidden items, distinguishing between full disgust and reduced value. The new chapter asks which blemishes permit slaughter of a firstborn, deriving a broader rule from the verses but then limiting it to blemishes that are visible, truly adverse, and not temporary. The daf finishes by debating exact measurements, showing that even technical shiurim remain part of the sugya’s argumentative movement.

Across both amudim, the daf develops in stages. It first asks what kinds of testimony can be accepted in firstborn cases, including second-hand testimony. It then analyzes why a speaker may be believed when his own words both create and relax the restriction, and when “why would he lie?” works only against suspicion, not against established fact. Narrative episodes expose how trust can become publicly charged. The sugya next tests whether likely exposure makes kohanim or Yisraelim credible in reporting a blemished transfer, while preserving limits and exceptions. Finally, it shifts from who is believed to who may authorize slaughter: three ordinary community members can act only in carefully delimited circumstances, especially for obvious blemishes and where no expert is available.

Bekhorot 35 develops in stages. It begins with classification of acts and consequences, then presents two mishnah-cases in which a blemish is initially permitted because it was not done with the relevant awareness, but later imitations are forbidden. The gemara then tests how far awareness extends through wording, indirect causation, and acts done in response to pursuit. Next it defines boundaries of birth and of visibility, showing that a defect need not be constantly visible to count. Finally, the daf shifts from creating blemishes to trusting testimony about them, preserves competing explanations of who is believed and why, reaches a limited conclusion in favor of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel, and still ends with an unresolved challenge to Rabbi Meir’s wider principle of suspicion.

Across both amudim, the sugya repeatedly refines itself. It begins by including intentionally arranged indirect blemishing within the prohibition. It then proposes a verse-based reading of the dispute about guarding doubtful terumah, challenges that reading, and replaces it with a dispute about what is considered fit to guard. It clarifies that Shmuel’s statement follows the Rabbi Shimon of a baraita. On 34b it narrows the logic of penalty: the Sages block the very benefit sought through the forbidden act, while later asking whether that penalty attaches only to the offender or also continues to his heir. One wording question remains unresolved.

Across both amudim, the daf develops by narrowing and re-narrowing each claim. It begins with Beit Hillel’s broad inclusion of additional eaters for a blemished firstborn, then tests whether distinctions from other areas of law can limit that inclusion. It turns from eating to handling, asking who authored restrictions on "margilin" and offering several non-identical explanations for them. Finally, it shifts to bloodletting a firstborn in danger, first comparing that dispute to doubtful terumah, then rejecting a simple analogy and grounding the core disagreement in scriptural readings about making a blemish. The result is a sugya that advances less by one final rule than by careful control of categories, comparisons, and textual scope.

Across this daf, the Gemara moves carefully rather than linearly. It opens with a limited permission for orphans, explores whether pricing can be concealed through havla'ah, then spends most of its energy asking how animal tithe can be barred from sale. Several derivations are proposed, challenged, refined, and partially replaced, until Rav Ashi reads “lo yigga’el” itself as banning sale. Only then does the mishnah introduce a separate dispute about who may join in a firstborn animal, showing that the daf advances by testing distinctions rather than flattening them.

Bekhorot 31 begins by allowing renewed acceptance according to one view, then distinguishes that question from self-interest in inspecting one’s own case. It explains how market permission after redemption can increase the treasury’s gain beforehand, separates firstborn from animal tithe, pauses to insist on attributing teachings to their source, and ends with Abaye and Rava offering competing readings of a baraita rather than a single merged conclusion.

Bekhorot 30 examines how far suspicion extends, what a complete commitment requires, and why admission, instruction and established status are separate questions.

Bekhorot 29 studies how trust is protected through the structure of payment, careful distinctions between tasks, and precisely bounded restrictions in the marketplace.
