The guiding question

How does the argument develop across both sides of this daf?

From direct blemishing to arranged causation

The opening source widens the prohibition around a firstborn animal. It does not speak only about placing a blemish on the animal directly. It also asks how we know that one may not bring pressed figs or dough and put them on the ear so that a dog will come and eat it. The derivation from the verse’s inclusive wording teaches that the sugya counts an intentionally arranged path to a blemish within the prohibition as well.

That point matters because the Gemara is already distinguishing between the hand that does the final damage and the person who deliberately set the damage in motion. The text here does not yet sort every kind of causation into a full hierarchy. Still, it clearly refuses to treat careful indirect arrangement as outside the problem. The prohibition is not reduced to the last physical bite by the dog.

A textual explanation proposed, challenged, and replaced

The Gemara then addresses the dispute about guarding doubtful terumah. At first it explains the disagreement through the wording of the verse about the charge of terumot. Rabbi Eliezer is presented as reading the plural form as speaking of two categories: pure terumah and doubtful terumah, both requiring protection. Rabbi Yehoshua is then read more narrowly, limiting the verse by the wording the Gemara cites as singular.

But this explanation is challenged immediately. If so, would that mean Rabbi Eliezer consistently follows one mode of reading Scripture? The Gemara brings the dispute over the phrase about a maidservant, where Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Eliezer divide differently between written form and read form. That counterexample undercuts the first framing. The sugya therefore does not let a neat textual theory stand once another source pushes against it.

The Gemara replaces that account with a different one. Rabbi Yehoshua’s position becomes: guard what is fit for you, and what is not fit for you is not subject to that guarding. Rabbi Eliezer responds that doubtful terumah is also considered fit, because perhaps Elijah will come and purify it. The disagreement now turns from parsing a word to defining whether doubtful terumah still counts as a preservable religious object.

Why naming the right Rabbi Shimon matters

From there the sugya pauses over a short ruling of Shmuel. Rav Yehudah said in Shmuel’s name that the halakhah follows Rabbi Shimon. Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak immediately asks which Rabbi Shimon is meant. If it were the Rabbi Shimon of the mishnah, the statement would add little, since the Gemara already knows another report in which Shmuel aligns with the view that an unintended act is permitted.

The Gemara supports that objection by citing familiar formulations: Rav with Rabbi Yehudah, Shmuel with Rabbi Shimon. Since that broader pairing is already established, Shmuel’s statement here must point to a more specific source. The conclusion is that he meant the Rabbi Shimon of the baraita, and another transmission states this openly. The move is small, but it shows the sugya’s insistence on precise attribution before building further argument.

Defining the target of the penalty

The mishnah then returns to the firstborn itself. One who slits the ear of a firstborn, Rabbi Eliezer says, may never slaughter it on that basis. The Sages say that if another blemish develops, he may slaughter because of that later blemish. The Gemara tests Rabbi Eliezer’s severity against another teaching: a person who intentionally cut off a white mark of nega is told by Rabbi Eliezer that when another nega appears, he can become pure through that later development.

Rabbah and Rav Yosef answer by distinguishing domains. Rabbi Eliezer imposes a penalty in matters of property, but not in one’s body. Their reasoning is explicit: regarding money, one can say that a person may come to do the act for gain; regarding his body, that rationale is harder to press. This is not yet the final framing of the sugya, but it explains why the two statements of Rabbi Eliezer need not collide.

Rava pushes further. If contradiction is our concern, why ask only about Rabbi Eliezer? The Sages also seem to vary between the two cases. The Gemara’s fuller conclusion is that there is no contradiction on either side, because the penalty is tied to the exact result produced by the forbidden act. In the firstborn case, he sought permission through this blemish, so that blemish is blocked. In the nega case, he sought purification through this cutting, so that cutting is blocked.

A wording doubt that the sugya will not force closed

The next discussion turns on a very small textual difference in the nega teaching: do we read the line as “he becomes pure,” or as “and he becomes pure”? Rav Pappa asks what difference this makes, and the Gemara answers: it matters for a groom in whom a nega appears. Another mishnah grants delay to such a groom for seven days, and likewise grants delay during a festival.

The Gemara then traces the consequences of each wording. If the shorter reading is correct, purity may already have taken effect at the earlier stage, and the later waiting period can still function. If the reading with the added conjunction is correct, the difficulty sharpens, because even if the later stage does not newly defile him, he was already standing in impurity from before. The sugya leaves the question unresolved with teiku, marking a real limit in what it is prepared to claim.

Does the penalty end with the sinner?

The daf closes by asking whether a penalty survives the offender. Rabbi Yirmeyah asks Rabbi Zeira about one who slit the ear of a firstborn and then died: do we penalize his son after him? The Gemara compares this with two other penalty-patterns. In one, a seller of his slave to gentiles leaves behind an ongoing harm, since each day the slave is removed from mitzvot. In another, one who arranged his labor for the festival’s intermediate days and then died does not leave that penalty to his son.

The question is formulated sharply: did the Sages penalize the person, who is now gone, or his monetary benefit, which still remains? Rabbi Zeira answers from the shevi'it case of a field improved in the sabbatical year. If the improvement happened by itself, the field may be sown after shevi'it; if it was intentionally improved, it may not. Yet Rav Assi bar Rabbi Ḥanina reports an adopted teaching: if he improved it and died, his son may sow it. The comparison points toward a penalty attached to the offender rather than automatically to the heir.

So the movement of the daf is not simply from one topic to the next. Again and again the Gemara takes a broad statement and makes it more exact. Indirectly arranged damage is included, but in a defined way. A verse-based explanation is offered and then replaced. A general attribution to Rabbi Shimon is narrowed to a specific baraita. A penalty is clarified as frustrating the benefit sought through the forbidden act, and then its reach is tested at the boundary between offender and heir. That returns us to the opening question: the argument develops by refinement, challenge, and careful limitation, not by one straight line.
