Why does the Torah end its teaching in song?
To read the opening of Moshe's song, its call to remember and ask, and his final words about the song's purpose, and to ask how poetry carries what prose alone cannot.
1. Give ear, heavensא.
Deuteronomy 32:1 says: give ear, heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth. Verse 2: let my teaching drop like rain, my speech distill like dew, like showers on grass and like drops on herbs.
The song addresses heaven and earth as witnesses and compares teaching to rain and dew. Rain falls gradually and nourishes over time. As our reflection, the image suggests that teaching works slowly, entering where it falls, rather than all at once.
2. The Rock, whose work is perfectב.
Deuteronomy 32:3 says: for I will proclaim the name of HaShem; ascribe greatness to our God. Verse 4: the Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice; a God of faithfulness without iniquity, righteous and upright is he.
Before the song recounts the people's failings, it declares the justice and faithfulness of HaShem. Verse 4 is used in the traditional burial service, the Tzidduk HaDin; we mention this only as known practice. The song begins with trust before it turns to rebuke.
3. Remember the days of oldג.
Deuteronomy 32:7 says: remember the days of old, consider the years of generation after generation; ask your father and he will tell you, your elders and they will say to you.
The song directs the listener to ask the previous generation. Memory is not only stored in texts; it lives in conversation between generations. As our application, the song invites us to ask our elders questions while we still can.
4. It is your lifeד.
Deuteronomy 32:46 says Moshe told them: set your hearts to all the words I testify to you today, which you shall command your children to keep, to do all the words of this Torah. Verse 47: for it is not an empty thing for you; it is your life, and through this thing you will prolong your days on the land.
After the song, Moshe insists: "it is not an empty thing". The word "rek", empty, has been read in many ways, including the possibility that any emptiness is "from you", from the reader. We leave the debate open. The plain statement is that these words are life itself.
5. Why songה.
Our passages move from a teaching that falls like rain, to trust in a faithful Rock, to questions asked of elders, to words that are life. The form is poetry, which can be remembered, sung, and passed on.
So why does the Torah end its teaching in song? These verses suggest: because song falls gently and lasts, because it can hold praise and rebuke together, because it travels between generations, and because it reminds us that these words are not empty. For a project of sung Torah, this parashah offers its own justification. The exercise for this week is to learn one verse of Ha'azinu by heart, in melody.
