What does it mean to end, and to begin again?
To read Moshe's final blessing, the verse naming Torah as an inheritance, and the account of his death and uniqueness, and to ask how the Torah's ending opens into its beginning in the yearly cycle.
1. This is the blessingא.
Deuteronomy 33:1 says: this is the blessing with which Moshe, the man of Elohim, blessed the children of Yisrael before his death.
Moshe's last act before death is to bless. He is called here "man of Elohim", a title not used for him earlier in the Torah in this form. The Torah that opened with Elohim blessing the seventh day now closes with a person blessing a people. That parallel is our reading across the whole Torah.
2. An inheritance of the congregationב.
Deuteronomy 33:4 says: Moshe commanded us Torah, an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov.
The Torah is described as an inheritance belonging to the whole congregation, not to a class of scholars. This verse is traditionally among the first a child is taught; we mention that as known custom. An inheritance is received, guarded, and passed on.
3. Moshe died thereג.
Deuteronomy 34:4 says HaShem showed Moshe the land promised to Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov: I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross there. Verse 5: Moshe, the servant of HaShem, died there in the land of Moav by the mouth of HaShem. Verse 6 says no one knows his burial place to this day; verse 7 says he was one hundred and twenty, his eye had not dimmed nor his vigor fled.
Moshe's request from Va'etchanan was to see the land, and in the end he sees it, though he does not enter. He is called "servant of HaShem" at his death. His grave is unknown, so that no place becomes the focus instead of the teaching. That last point is a widely held interpretation, not the verse's own statement.
4. Face to faceד.
Deuteronomy 34:10 says: there has not arisen again a prophet in Yisrael like Moshe, whom HaShem knew face to face. Verses 11-12 recall all the signs and wonders in Egypt and all the mighty hand and great awe that Moshe performed before the eyes of all Yisrael.
The last words of the Torah are "before the eyes of all Yisrael". In the yearly reading cycle, these words are followed immediately by "Bereshit", the first word of Genesis, on Simchat Torah. As our closing reflection, the Torah's last phrase speaks of what all Yisrael saw, and its first phrase speaks of creation. The end is a vantage point from which to begin again.
5. Ending and beginningה.
Our passages move from a final blessing, to Torah as an inheritance, to a death in which the land is seen but not entered, to the last words of the Torah. The year of study that began with "a beginning that is given" ends here with a teaching handed on.
So what does it mean to end and to begin again? These verses suggest: to end with blessing, to treat what we have received as an inheritance to pass on, to accept that we may see further than we can go, and to turn the last page so that the first can be read with new eyes. The exercise for this week is to reread the first verse of Bereshit after the last verse of Devarim, and to ask what you see differently after a year.
