How do we hand over what we have carried?
To read Moshe's acknowledgment of his limits, his charge to Yehoshua, and the commandment of Hakhel as a model of transition, and to ask how continuity is secured through honesty, encouragement, and shared learning.
1. Moshe wentא.
Deuteronomy 31:1 says: Moshe went and spoke these words to all Yisrael. Verse 2: he said to them, I am one hundred and twenty years old today; I can no longer go out and come in; and HaShem said to me, you shall not cross this Jordan.
The verse says Moshe "went" without saying where; interpreters have offered several readings. We note that he goes to the people rather than waiting for them, and that he names his limits openly. A good handover begins with honesty about what one can no longer do.
2. Be strong and courageousב.
Deuteronomy 31:7 says Moshe called Yehoshua and said to him before the eyes of all Yisrael: be strong and courageous, for you will come with this people into the land HaShem swore to their fathers, and you will give it to them as an inheritance.
The encouragement is given "before the eyes of all Yisrael". The outgoing leader publicly strengthens his successor, so that the people see the transfer. As our application, handing over includes giving the next person confidence in front of others.
3. HaShem goes before youג.
Deuteronomy 31:8 says: HaShem is the one who goes before you; he will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.
Moshe does not present himself as irreplaceable. He points his successor beyond both of them: HaShem goes before you. As our reflection, a leader who hands over well directs the next generation's trust not to himself but to what sustained him.
4. Gather the peopleד.
Deuteronomy 31:12 says: gather the people, the men, women, and children, and your stranger in your gates, so that they hear and learn and fear HaShem your God and keep all the words of this Torah. Verse 13: and their children who did not know will hear and learn.
The final structure Moshe establishes is not a new office but a gathering of everyone: men, women, children, and strangers. Its explicit purpose includes "their children who did not know". Continuity rests ultimately not on one successor but on a whole community that keeps learning together.
5. Handing overה.
Our passages move from honesty about limits, to public encouragement of a successor, to pointing beyond oneself, to gathering everyone to learn. Each step makes the transition less dependent on one person.
So how do we hand over what we have carried? These verses suggest: by naming our limits, strengthening the next person in public, directing trust beyond ourselves, and building a community of learners rather than a single heir. The exercise for this week is to encourage one person who is taking over something you once did.

- Why might Moshe state his age and limits openly?
- What is gained by encouraging a successor 'before the eyes of all Yisrael'?
- Why might the last structure be a gathering of everyone rather than a single office?
