Is the covenant within our reach?
To read the inclusion of future generations in the covenant, the declaration that the commandment is not in heaven, and the call to choose life, and to ask how a demanding covenant can be described as near.
1. Also with whoever is not hereא.
Deuteronomy 29:13 says: not with you alone do I make this covenant and this oath. Verse 14: but with whoever is here standing with us today before HaShem our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.
The covenant reaches beyond the people standing there. Tradition understands "whoever is not here" to include future generations; the verse itself states only absence. As our reflection, every reader of this verse can find themselves among "those not here".
2. Not too wondrous, not farב.
Deuteronomy 30:11 says: this commandment which I command you today is not too wondrous for you, nor is it far. Verse 12: it is not in heaven, that you should say, who will go up to heaven for us and take it for us and make us hear it, that we may do it?
The verse anticipates an excuse: that the commandment is too high or too distant, requiring someone else to bring it. It rejects that excuse. The phrase "it is not in heaven" has a famous later use in the Talmud; we do not discuss it here. We note the direct address: "for you", "from you".
3. In your mouth and in your heartג.
Deuteronomy 30:13 continues: nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, who will cross the sea for us? Verse 14: for the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.
The verse names three places: mouth, heart, and doing. Nearness is not only intellectual; it is in speech, feeling, and action. As our application, a commitment feels distant until we speak it, feel it, and take a first step toward it.
4. Choose lifeד.
Deuteronomy 30:19 says: I call heaven and earth to witness against you today: life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse; and you shall choose life, so that you and your seed may live. Verse 20: to love HaShem your God, to listen to his voice, and to cling to him, for he is your life and the length of your days.
The verse sets two options and then tells the listener which to choose. Freedom and guidance stand together. The choice is for "you and your seed", linking back to those "not here". As our reflection, choosing life is also a choice for those who will come after.
5. Within reachה.
Our passages move from a covenant that includes the absent, to a commandment that is not too far, to a word in mouth and heart, to a choice of life for oneself and one's descendants.
So is the covenant within our reach? These verses answer clearly that it is: not in heaven, not across the sea, but very near. The exercise for this week, close to Rosh HaShanah, is to name one commitment you have been treating as too far, and to bring it into your mouth, your heart, and one action.
