What restrains power from becoming arrogance?

Learning objective

To read the laws of judges, of the king, and of trees in wartime as three limits placed on authority, and to ask what keeps strength in the service of justice and life.

1. Judges in all your gatesא.

Deuteronomy 16:18 says: appoint judges and officers in all your gates, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. Verse 19: do not pervert judgment, do not show favor, and do not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

The verse warns that a bribe blinds "the wise" and twists "the righteous". It does not assume that good people are immune. As our reflection, restraint on power begins with admitting that anyone can be corrupted.

2. Justice, justice you shall pursueב.

Deuteronomy 16:20 says: justice, justice you shall pursue, so that you may live and inherit the land that HaShem your God gives you.

The word "justice" is doubled, and the verb is "pursue", not merely "do". Interpreters have explained the doubling in many ways; we leave them open. We note only that justice is presented as something one runs after, and that life in the land depends on it.

3. The king writes the Torahג.

Deuteronomy 17:18 says: when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this Torah on a scroll before the Levite priests. Verse 19: it shall be with him and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he learns to fear HaShem his God and to keep all the words of this Torah.

The most powerful person must write the law with his own hand and read it "all the days of his life". He is placed under the Torah, not above it. As our reflection, power is restrained by a text that the powerful must keep reading.

4. That his heart not be lifted above his brothersד.

Deuteronomy 17:20 says: so that his heart not be lifted above his brothers, and that he not turn from the commandment right or left, so that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his sons, among Yisrael.

The king is still called a brother: "above his brothers". Arrogance is named as the danger, and remaining among the people is named as the condition of continuity. We note the phrase "among Yisrael", which places the king inside the people.

5. Is the tree of the field a man?ה.

Deuteronomy 20:19 says: when you besiege a city many days, do not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them, for from them you will eat, and you shall not cut them down; is the tree of the field a man, that it should come before you in siege?

So what restrains power? These verses suggest: honest institutions that admit corruptibility, the pursuit of justice, rulers bound to a text they must keep reading, hearts kept among their brothers, and limits even in war on the destruction of what sustains life. The exercise for this week is to identify one area where you hold power and name the limit that keeps it in service.
