What choices does a free person face every day?
To read the setting of blessing and curse, the command to open one's hand to the poor, and the command to rejoice with the vulnerable, and to ask how freedom of choice becomes concrete in economic and festive life.
1. See, I set before youא.
Deuteronomy 11:26 says: see, I set before you today a blessing and a curse. Verses 27-28 explain: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of HaShem your God; and the curse, if you do not listen and turn from the way to follow other gods.
The address begins in the singular, "see", and continues in the plural, "before you". Each person sees, and the whole people chooses. The word "today" appears in all three verses. As our reflection, the choice is not made once in history; it is renewed daily.
2. Do not harden your heartב.
Deuteronomy 15:7 says: if there is among you a poor person, one of your brothers, in one of your gates in your land, do not harden your heart and do not close your hand from your poor brother.
The verse prohibits two things: hardening the heart and closing the hand. The inner and outer responses are joined. The poor person is called "your brother". As our reflection, the daily choice between blessing and curse is made concretely here, at the moment someone in need stands before us.
3. Open your handג.
Deuteronomy 15:8 says: you shall surely open your hand to him and surely lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he lacks.
The measure is "sufficient for his need", defined by what the person lacks rather than by what the giver feels like giving. The halakhic limits of this obligation are discussed in later sources; we note only that the verse centers the need of the other.
4. You shall rejoice in your festivalד.
Deuteronomy 16:14 says: you shall rejoice in your festival, you, your son and daughter, your servant and maidservant, the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow who are in your gates. Verse 15 says: seven days you shall celebrate to HaShem your God, for HaShem will bless you in all your produce, and you shall be only joyful.
The list of those included in the joy moves from family to servants to the Levite, stranger, orphan, and widow. Joy here is commanded, and it is commanded to be shared. As our reflection, the choice of blessing extends even to how we celebrate.
5. Daily choicesה.
Our passages move from a general choice between blessing and curse, to the specific moment of meeting a poor person, to the measure of giving, to a festival joy that includes the most vulnerable.
So what choices does a free person face every day? These verses suggest: whether to listen, whether to keep the heart soft and the hand open, and whether to share one's joy. The exercise for this week is to notice one moment when your hand begins to close, and to choose to open it.
