What does it take to see what is really there?

Learning objective

To read the episode of Bilam's donkey and two of his oracles as a study in perception, and to ask how a person sent to curse comes to see and speak blessing.

1. An angel in the roadא.

Numbers 22:22 says Elohim's anger burned because he was going, and the angel of HaShem stood in the road as an adversary to him, while he was riding on his donkey with two young men. Verse 23 says the donkey saw the angel standing in the road with a drawn sword and turned aside into the field; Bilam struck the donkey to turn her back to the road.

The one known as a seer does not see; his donkey does. He responds to what he does not understand by striking. As our reflection, a reputation for vision does not guarantee seeing, and frustration often lands on whoever is closest.

2. How can I curse whom El has not cursed?ב.

In Numbers 23:7 Bilam takes up his parable: from Aram Balak brought me, the king of Moav from the mountains of the east: come, curse Yaakov for me; come, denounce Yisrael. Verse 8: how can I curse whom El has not cursed, and how denounce whom HaShem has not denounced?

Bilam repeats the request he was given and then admits that he cannot fulfill it. The one hired to speak against a people finds that his words are not his own to control. That is our reading of the oracle's structure.

3. A people that dwells apartג.

Numbers 23:9 says: for from the top of rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him; behold, a people that dwells alone and is not reckoned among the nations.

Bilam sees from a height. The meaning of "dwells alone" has been read in many ways, as distinction, as isolation, as security. We leave its interpretation open and note only that the view from above changes what he says.

4. How good are your tentsד.

Numbers 24:2 says Bilam lifted his eyes and saw Yisrael dwelling according to its tribes, and the spirit of Elohim came upon him. Verses 3-4 describe him as the man whose eye is open, who hears the words of El. Verse 5: how good are your tents, Yaakov, your dwellings, Yisrael.

This time Bilam lifts his own eyes and sees the people "according to its tribes", in their ordinary arrangement of homes. What he sees becomes blessing. These words entered daily prayer; we note that the blessing comes from looking at dwellings, at life as it is lived.

5. Learning to seeה.

Our passages move from a seer who cannot see, to a speaker who cannot curse, to a view from the heights, to blessing that comes from looking at ordinary homes.

So what does it take to see what is really there? These verses suggest: humility when others see what we miss, honesty when our assigned words do not match reality, and the willingness to lift our own eyes and look at how people actually live. The exercise for this week is to look at one place you are inclined to criticize and find one thing in it that is genuinely good.

Keep the conversation going

  1. Why might the donkey see what the seer cannot?
  2. What changes when Bilam lifts his own eyes in 24:2?
  3. Where could looking at how people actually live turn criticism into blessing?
