The guiding question

How do we act faithfully when we do not fully understand?

Learning objective

To read the law of the red heifer, the death of Miriam, and the episode at the rock as three encounters with what is hard to grasp, and to ask how grief and pressure affect even the greatest leaders.

1. This is the statute of the Torahא.

Numbers 19:2 says: this is the statute of the Torah which HaShem commanded, saying: speak to the children of Yisrael that they bring you a red heifer, unblemished, with no defect, upon which no yoke has come. Verse 3 says it shall be given to Elazar the priest and slaughtered outside the camp before him.

The word "chukat" is often associated in the tradition with laws whose reasons are not given. The verse itself does not explain the purpose of the heifer. We do not attempt an explanation; we note that the Torah presents a commandment that is carried out even when its logic is not stated.

2. Miriam died thereב.

Numbers 20:1 says the children of Yisrael, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Tzin in the first month; the people stayed in Kadesh; Miriam died there and was buried there. Verse 2 says: there was no water for the congregation, and they gathered against Moshe and Aharon.

Miriam's death is reported in one short verse, and the lack of water follows immediately. The text does not describe a mourning period for her here. The connection between her death and the water has been drawn by rabbinic tradition; we note only the juxtaposition in the text and the absence of any pause.

3. Listen, you rebelsג.

Numbers 20:10 says Moshe and Aharon gathered the assembly before the rock, and he said to them: listen now, you rebels; shall we bring water out of this rock for you? Verse 11 says Moshe raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, and much water came out.

The water comes, and the people and their animals drink. Moshe's words are harsh, and he strikes twice. What exactly went wrong at the rock has been interpreted in many ways; we do not choose one. We note only that this happens directly after his sister's death, a fact the text places in the same chapter.

4. Because you did not trust meד.

Numbers 20:12 says HaShem said to Moshe and Aharon: because you did not trust in me, to sanctify me before the eyes of the children of Yisrael, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.

The consequence is severe and is not reversed in the Torah. The text holds even its greatest leader to account. At the same time, it has shown us the circumstances: grief, thirst, a gathering against them. As our reflection, understanding circumstances does not cancel accountability, and accountability does not erase compassion for those circumstances.

5. Acting faithfully without full understandingה.

Our passages bring together a law without a stated reason, a death without a described mourning, and a moment of pressure with a lasting consequence. Each confronts the reader with something not fully explained.

So how do we act faithfully without full understanding? These verses suggest: by keeping commitments whose reasons we do not grasp, by giving grief its due before responding to pressure, and by accepting accountability without losing compassion. The exercise for this week is to notice a moment when grief or pressure is shaping your words, and to pause before speaking.

  3. How can we hold someone accountable while understanding their circumstances?
