What kind of passion builds a community rather than burns it?

Learning objective

To read the covenant of peace given to Pinchas, the claim of the daughters of Tzelofchad, and Moshe's request for a successor, and to ask how strong commitment can be channeled into peace, justice, and care for the community.

1. My covenant of peaceא.

Numbers 25:11 says Pinchas son of Elazar son of Aharon the priest turned back HaShem's wrath from the children of Yisrael by his zeal among them. Verse 12: therefore say, behold, I give him my covenant of peace. Verse 13 speaks of an eternal priesthood for him and his descendants.

The act that preceded this, at the end of the previous parashah, was violent, and its interpretation has troubled and occupied the tradition. We do not treat it as a model for individual action. We note only that the reward given is named "peace", and that the priesthood it establishes is a role of service.

2. The daughters of Tzelofchadב.

Numbers 27:1 names the daughters of Tzelofchad: Machlah, No'ah, Choglah, Milkah, and Tirtzah. Verse 2 says they stood before Moshe, Elazar the priest, the princes, and the whole congregation at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

Each daughter is named, and they stand before every level of leadership at once. Their passion is expressed not by force but by coming forward publicly with a claim. As our reflection, this too is a kind of zeal: commitment that seeks justice through speech.

3. Why should our father's name be diminished?ג.

Numbers 27:3 says: our father died in the wilderness; he was not among the company of Korach, but died in his own sin, and he had no sons. Verse 4: why should our father's name be diminished from among his family because he had no son? Give us a holding among our father's brothers.

Their question "why should it be diminished" echoes the language of those who asked for a second Pesach. They argue carefully: they clarify that their father was not among the rebels, and they ask for a share within the existing structure, not outside it. We note the cross-reference to Numbers 9:7 as our reading.

4. That the congregation not be like sheep without a shepherdד.

Numbers 27:15-16 says Moshe spoke to HaShem: may HaShem, God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation. Verse 17: who will go out before them and come in before them, who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of HaShem not be like sheep that have no shepherd.

Having just learned that he will not enter the land, Moshe asks not for himself but for a successor. He addresses HaShem as "God of the spirits of all flesh", knowing each person's spirit. His passion here is directed entirely toward the people's future.

5. Passion that buildsה.

Our passages place three kinds of commitment side by side: a zeal rewarded with a covenant of peace, daughters who press their claim through speech, and a leader who uses his last requests to secure a shepherd for others.

So what kind of passion builds a community? These verses suggest: passion whose end is peace, passion that seeks justice through honest speech within shared structures, and passion that looks beyond oneself to the next leader and the next generation. The exercise for this week is to direct one strong feeling you have into a request on behalf of someone else.

  1. Why might the reward for zeal be called a 'covenant of peace'?
  2. What makes the daughters' claim persuasive?
  3. What does Moshe's request for a successor teach about leadership at the end of a journey?
