What happens when someone asks not to be left out?

Learning objective

To read the lighting of the Menorah, the request of those who could not bring the Pesach, and the description of Moshe's humility, and to ask how light, listening, and humility make room for those at the edge.

1. Toward the face of the Menorahא.

Numbers 8:2 says: speak to Aharon: when you raise the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light toward the face of the Menorah. Verse 3 says Aharon did so; he raised its lamps toward the face of the Menorah, as HaShem commanded Moshe.

Seven separate lights are turned toward one center. Verse 3 notes simply that Aharon did as commanded. We read the image as distinct sources of light sharing an orientation; the precise arrangement of the lamps is discussed elsewhere.

2. Men who could not keep the Pesachב.

Numbers 9:6 says there were men who were impure through contact with a human body and could not make the Pesach on that day; they came before Moshe and Aharon on that day.

Their impurity came from contact with the dead, an obligation often linked to caring for the deceased. They were not at fault, yet they were excluded. The verse says they "drew near" anyway. We note their initiative.

3. Why should we be diminished?ג.

Numbers 9:7 says: those men said to him, we are impure through a human body; why should we be diminished, not to bring the offering of HaShem in its appointed time among the children of Yisrael? Verse 8: Moshe said to them, stand, and I will hear what HaShem will command concerning you.

They want to be included "among the children of Yisrael". Moshe does not dismiss them; he says "stand, and I will hear". The law of a second Pesach follows in the next verses. As our application, a request not to be left out deserves the response of a leader who stops and listens.

4. The most humble of all peopleד.

Numbers 12:3 says: the man Moshe was very humble, more than any person on the face of the earth.

The verse appears in a context where Moshe is criticized by those close to him. We connect it with the earlier scene: the leader who could say "stand, and I will hear" is described elsewhere as the most humble person. We present this link as our reading, not as the text's claim.

5. Making roomה.

Our passages move from lamps turned toward a shared center, to people at the edge who ask to be included, to a leader who listens, to humility named as his defining trait.

So what happens when someone asks not to be left out? In these verses, the request is heard, the leader does not presume to know the answer, and a way is found. The exercise for this week is to notice one person who is excluded through no fault of their own, and to say, in some form, "stand, and I will listen".

  2. Why might Moshe answer 'stand, and I will hear' rather than give an immediate answer?
  3. Who in your surroundings is excluded through no fault of their own?
