What does it mean to carry blessing to others?

Learning objective

To read the law of confession and restitution, the words of the priestly blessing, and the princes' daily offerings as three ways blessing moves through a community.

1. They shall confessא.

Numbers 5:6 says: when a man or woman commits any of the sins of a person, to betray HaShem, and that soul is guilty. Verse 7 says: they shall confess the sin they committed, return the principal of the guilt, add a fifth to it, and give it to the one he wronged.

Confession comes with words and with repayment, plus a fifth more than what was taken. Repair here exceeds the damage. Rabbinic law developed confession from this verse; we note only that blessing in a community begins with honest repair.

2. Thus shall you blessב.

Numbers 6:22-23 says HaShem spoke to Moshe: speak to Aharon and his sons, saying: thus shall you bless the children of Yisrael; say to them. The priests receive not only permission to bless but a form of words.

The blessing is given a fixed form. Those who bless do not invent it; they carry it. As our reflection, some of the deepest blessings we give are words we have received and pass on faithfully.

3. Three verses of blessingג.

Numbers 6:24-26 gives the words: may HaShem bless you and guard you; may HaShem shine his face toward you and be gracious to you; may HaShem lift his face toward you and give you peace.

Each verse grows in length, and the blessing ends with peace. The words are addressed in the singular, "you", even when spoken to a whole people. The detailed laws of the priestly blessing are beyond our scope; we note only its movement from protection, to grace, to peace.

4. They shall put my nameד.

Numbers 6:27 concludes: they shall put my name upon the children of Yisrael, and I will bless them. The priests speak; HaShem blesses.

The verse divides the roles: the priests "put the name", and the blessing comes from above. As our application, carrying blessing does not mean being its source. A person can be a channel without claiming to be the origin.

5. One prince each dayה.

Numbers 7:10 says the princes brought the dedication offering of the altar on the day it was anointed. Verse 11 says: HaShem said to Moshe, one prince each day, one prince each day, they shall bring their offering for the dedication of the altar.

So what does it mean to carry blessing? These passages suggest: repairing what we have damaged, passing on received words faithfully, knowing we are channels and not sources, and giving each contributor a day of their own, as the princes each received their own day although their offerings were identical. The exercise for this week is to give one person a moment of recognition that is entirely theirs.

  1. Why might restitution require adding a fifth to what was taken?
  2. What is the difference between being a source of blessing and a channel of it?
  3. Why might each prince receive his own day, even with identical gifts?
