The guiding question

How does the way we see ourselves shape what we can do?

Learning objective

To read the sending of the scouts, their report, and the commandment of tzitzit as a sequence about perception, and to ask how fear can distort sight and how a visible reminder can redirect it.

1. Send for yourselfא.

Numbers 13:1-2 says HaShem spoke to Moshe: send for yourself men to scout the land of Canaan that I am giving to the children of Yisrael; one man for each tribe of his fathers, each a prince among them.

The land is described as one "I am giving". The mission begins with a promise already stated, and the scouts are leaders, not ordinary men. The phrase "send for yourself" has been read in many ways; we leave that open.

2. We can surely do itב.

Numbers 13:30 says Kalev quieted the people toward Moshe and said: let us surely go up and possess it, for we can surely do it. Verse 31 says the men who went up with him said: we cannot go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.

The same journey produces two opposite conclusions: "we can surely" and "we cannot". The facts seen were largely shared; the interpretation differed. We note that the text sets the two statements side by side.

3. Like grasshoppers in our own eyesג.

Numbers 13:32 says they spread an evil report of the land: a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw in it are men of great size. Verse 33 says: there we saw the giants, and we were in our own eyes like grasshoppers, and so we were in their eyes.

The scouts first describe how they saw themselves, then claim to know how others saw them. The second claim rests on the first. As our reflection, a diminished view of oneself can become a story about what everyone else thinks.

4. You shall see it and rememberד.

Numbers 15:39 says: it shall be for you a tzitzit; you shall see it and remember all the commandments of HaShem and do them, and you shall not stray after your heart and after your eyes. Verse 40 says: so that you remember and do all my commandments and be holy to your God.

The verb "tatur", stray, shares its root with the scouts' "latur", to scout. The parashah opens with scouting the land and ends with not straying after one's eyes. We note the shared root as a textual link and offer it as a reading, not as the text's own explanation.

5. Redirecting sightה.

Our passages move from a mission with a promise, to two opposite readings of the same land, to a diminished self-image projected onto others, to a visible sign meant to guide the eyes and the heart.

So how does self-perception shape action? These verses suggest that how we see ourselves can decide whether we go up or turn back, and that we may need visible reminders to see according to what we have been told, not only according to what we fear. The exercise for this week is to notice one "grasshopper" thought about yourself and to ask whether it is truly what others see.

  1. How can two people see the same land and reach opposite conclusions?
  2. What is the connection between 'we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes' and 'so we were in their eyes'?
  3. What visible reminder could help you see more truthfully?
