How does time become holy?

Learning objective

To read the command to sanctify the name, the opening of the festival calendar, and the law of gleanings placed within it, and to ask how sacred time includes responsibility for others.

1. I shall be sanctified among the children of Yisraelא.

Leviticus 22:31 says: keep my commandments and do them; I am HaShem. Verse 32 says: do not profane my holy name, and I shall be sanctified among the children of Yisrael; I am HaShem who sanctifies you. Verse 33 adds: who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God.

The verse speaks of sanctification happening "among" the people, and of HaShem as the one who sanctifies them. Holiness moves in both directions. The halakhic concept of kiddush HaShem drawn from this verse is beyond our scope; we note only the reciprocity in the wording.

2. Appointed times you shall proclaimב.

Leviticus 23:2 says: speak to the children of Yisrael: the appointed times of HaShem, which you shall proclaim as holy convocations; these are my appointed times.

The times are "of HaShem", yet "you shall proclaim them". The calendar involves divine appointment and human declaration. Rabbinic tradition built much on this; we observe only that holy time, in the verse's wording, requires the people's participation.

3. Shabbat firstג.

Leviticus 23:3 says: six days work shall be done, and on the seventh day is a Shabbat of complete rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no work; it is a Shabbat to HaShem in all your dwellings.

Before the yearly festivals, the chapter places the weekly Shabbat, observed "in all your dwellings". Sacred time begins at home and every week, not only in rare celebrations. That is our reading of the chapter's order.

4. The poor within the festivalsד.

Leviticus 23:22 says: when you reap the harvest of your land, do not finish the edge of your field as you reap, and do not gather the gleanings of your harvest; leave them for the poor and the stranger; I am HaShem your God.

This law appeared already in Kedoshim; here it is repeated in the middle of the festival calendar, between Shavuot and Rosh HaShanah. The text itself does not explain the repetition, and interpreters have offered reasons. We note only its effect: the calendar of holy days includes the poor and the stranger.

5. Holy timeה.

Our passages move from sanctifying the name, to appointed times that the people proclaim, to a weekly Shabbat in every dwelling, to the poor in the middle of the festivals. Holy time is both declared and lived.

So how does time become holy? These verses suggest: by our participation in proclaiming it, by keeping it weekly at home, and by making sure that celebration includes those with the least. The exercise for this week is to make your next Shabbat or festival table include someone who might otherwise be left at the edge.

  1. What does it mean that the appointed times are 'of HaShem' but 'you shall proclaim them'?
  2. Why might the law of gleanings appear in the middle of the festival calendar?
  3. Who could you include at your next festive table?
