Where does holiness live?
To read the call to holiness alongside the laws of gleaning and the command to rebuke and love, and to ask how holiness is located in ordinary economic and personal relations.
1. Speak to the whole congregationא.
Leviticus 19:1-2 says: HaShem spoke to Moshe, saying: speak to the whole congregation of the children of Yisrael and say to them: you shall be holy, for I, HaShem your God, am holy.
The call is addressed to "the whole congregation", not to the priests alone. Holiness is not reserved for a class. That is our observation of the address; the chapter that follows will show what it includes.
2. The edge of your fieldב.
Leviticus 19:9 says: when you reap the harvest of your land, do not finish the edge of your field, and do not gather the gleanings of your harvest. Verse 10 adds: do not glean your vineyard or gather its fallen grapes; leave them for the poor and the stranger; I am HaShem your God.
Immediately after the call to holiness, the chapter turns to agriculture. Holiness is located at the edge of a field and in what falls during the harvest. As our application, part of what we earn is not entirely ours to complete; leaving room at the edges is a holy act.
3. Do not hate in your heartג.
Leviticus 19:17 says: do not hate your brother in your heart; you shall surely rebuke your fellow, and do not bear sin because of him.
The verse links a hidden feeling, "in your heart", to open speech. Rather than nursing silent resentment, a person is told to speak. The proper manner and limits of rebuke are extensively treated in later sources; we note only that the verse prefers honest words to hidden hatred.
4. Love your neighbor as yourselfד.
Leviticus 19:18 says: do not take revenge and do not bear a grudge against the children of your people; love your neighbor as yourself; I am HaShem.
The famous command to love comes immediately after prohibitions on revenge and grudges. Love here is not first described as a feeling; it is set against specific behaviors that poison relationships. The scope of "your neighbor" has been widely discussed, and we leave it open.
5. Where holiness livesה.
Our passages move from a call to all the people, to the edges of a field, to the inner life of resentment, to the command of love. Holiness is placed in the economy and in the heart at once.
So where does holiness live? These verses suggest: in what we leave for others at the edges, in honest speech instead of hidden hatred, and in refusing revenge so that love becomes possible. The exercise for this week is to name one "edge" you could leave unharvested, and one resentment you could address with words instead of silence.

- Why might the call to holiness be followed immediately by laws of harvest?
- What is the difference between hidden hatred and honest rebuke?
- What 'edge' in your life could you leave for others?
