What does atonement ask of us, and what does it give?

Learning objective

To read the opening of the Yom Kippur chapter, its commandment to afflict oneself, and the promise of life in the commandments as a single movement from loss, through purification, toward life.

1. After the deathא.

Leviticus 16:1 says HaShem spoke to Moshe after the death of Aharon's two sons, when they drew near before HaShem and died. The laws of the holiest day are introduced by a reference to a loss.

The verse joins drawing near and dying in the same breath: "when they drew near ... and died". The day of atonement is framed by the memory that nearness without boundaries was dangerous. We read this as context, not as a full explanation of the day.

2. Not at every timeב.

Leviticus 16:2 says: speak to Aharon your brother, that he not come at every time into the holy place within the curtain, before the cover that is on the ark, so that he not die, for in the cloud I will appear upon the cover.

Before describing what Aharon may do, the text says when he may not enter. Atonement begins with a boundary in time. As our reflection, sacred encounters are not diminished by being limited; their limits are part of what keeps them life-giving.

3. You shall afflict yourselvesג.

Leviticus 16:29 says: it shall be an eternal statute for you; in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and do no work, the native and the stranger who dwells among you.

The day includes both the native and the stranger. Its specific practices are defined in rabbinic law, which is beyond our scope. What the verse establishes is that the work of the day is shared, and that it is done by stopping ordinary activity.

4. Before HaShem you shall be pureד.

Leviticus 16:30 says: for on this day he shall atone for you, to purify you; from all your sins before HaShem you shall be purified.

The verse ends with "before HaShem you shall be purified". The phrase "before HaShem" can be read with what precedes it or with what follows, and rabbinic tradition has drawn distinctions from this; we do not enter them here. We note only that the verse speaks of a purification that is given, not merely achieved.

5. And live by themה.

Leviticus 18:4 says: my judgments you shall do and my statutes you shall keep, to walk in them; I am HaShem your God. Verse 5 says: keep my statutes and my judgments, which a person shall do and live by them; I am HaShem.

The parashah that opens with a death moves, a few chapters later, to the words "and live by them". So what does atonement ask and give? These passages suggest: it asks for boundaries, for a shared stopping, and for honesty before HaShem; it gives purification and a path back to life. The exercise for this week is to name one boundary that would make a sacred relationship in your life safer and more alive.
