What does return require, from the one returning and from those who receive them?
To read the purification of the metzora and the law of the afflicted house as a picture of return in stages, and to ask how both the community and the returning person take part.
1. The priest goes outא.
Leviticus 14:2 says: this shall be the law of the metzora on the day of his purification; he shall be brought to the priest. Verse 3 says: the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp, and the priest shall look, and behold, the mark of tzara'at has been healed from the afflicted.
Verse 2 says he is "brought to the priest", and verse 3 says the priest goes out. The two movements meet. The person outside the camp is not required to cross the boundary alone; someone from inside comes toward him. That is our reading of the pairing.
2. Return in stagesב.
Leviticus 14:8 says the one being purified shall wash his garments, shave all his hair, bathe in water, and be pure; afterward he may enter the camp, but he shall stay outside his tent seven days.
Return happens in steps: first the camp, then, after seven days, the tent. The verse does not move the person from exclusion to full belonging in a single moment. As our application, reintegration after a period apart may need time and stages, both for the person and for those around them.
3. A mark in a houseג.
Leviticus 14:34 says: when you come into the land of Canaan which I give you as a holding, and I put a mark of tzara'at in a house of the land of your holding. Verse 35 says the owner of the house shall come and tell the priest: something like a mark has appeared to me in the house.
The owner says "something like a mark", not "a mark". He reports without declaring. The text gives the authority to decide to the priest, and the honest, tentative report to the owner. We note this modesty of speech as a model of describing a problem without pronouncing judgment.
4. Empty the house firstד.
Leviticus 14:36 says: the priest shall command, and they shall empty the house before the priest comes to see the mark, so that everything in the house will not become impure; afterward the priest shall come to see the house.
The law protects the owner's belongings from becoming impure by a judgment not yet made. The priest delays his examination for the sake of the household. As our reflection, careful procedure can include consideration for what a person stands to lose, even before any conclusion.
5. What return requiresה.
Our passages show a priest who goes out, a person who comes back in stages, an owner who speaks carefully, and a procedure that protects what can be protected. Return here involves both sides.
So what does return require? From those inside: going out to meet, patience with stages, and care for what the other might lose. From the one returning: willingness to take steps and to speak honestly. The exercise for this week is to consider one person returning to a community you belong to, and which of these you could offer.
