The guiding question

What changes when we treat what we hold as entrusted rather than owned?

Learning objective

To read the Shemitah, the Yovel, and the declaration that the land belongs to HaShem as a foundation for economic humility, and to ask how rest and release shape ownership.

1. At Mount Sinaiא.

Leviticus 25:1 says HaShem spoke to Moshe at Mount Sinai. Verse 2 continues: when you come into the land that I give you, the land shall rest a Shabbat to HaShem.

The question of why Shemitah is linked to Mount Sinai is famous in rabbinic literature; we leave it open. What the verse itself says is that the land, not only the people, has a Shabbat. Rest extends to the earth.

2. Six years, and the seventhב.

Leviticus 25:3 says: six years you shall sow your field and six years prune your vineyard and gather its produce. Verse 4 says: in the seventh year there shall be a Shabbat of complete rest for the land, a Shabbat to HaShem; you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.

The pattern of the week is extended to years. Work is affirmed, "six years you shall sow", and then limited. As our reflection, a society that regularly stops producing is reminded that production is not its only purpose.

3. Proclaim libertyג.

Leviticus 25:8-9 describes counting seven sabbaths of years and sounding the shofar on Yom Kippur of the forty-ninth year. Verse 10 says: you shall sanctify the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty in the land to all its inhabitants; it shall be a Yovel for you; each person shall return to his holding and to his family.

The proclamation of liberty is announced on the Day of Atonement. Release in the economic sphere is joined to atonement in the spiritual one. The verse also says people return "to their family", not only to property. We note both connections as features of the text.

4. For the land is mineד.

Leviticus 25:23 says: the land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is mine; for you are strangers and residents with me.

The phrase "strangers and residents" recalls Avraham's words when he sought a grave in Chayei Sarah. Here the whole people stands in that position, not before the children of Chet but "with me". As our reading, ownership is relativized by a relationship: we dwell on land entrusted to us.

5. Entrusted, not ownedה.

Our passages move from a Shabbat for the land, to a seventh year of rest, to a fiftieth year of liberty, to the declaration that the land is HaShem's. Each stage loosens the grip of possession.

So what changes when we treat what we hold as entrusted? These verses suggest: work is followed by rest, accumulation by release, and ownership by the awareness of dwelling with HaShem. The exercise for this week is to identify one thing you hold tightly and to practice one small act of release with it.
