What do we hold onto when our deepest request is refused?

Learning objective

To read Moshe's plea to enter the land and its refusal, his warning to remember and teach, and the Shema, and to ask how a person turns an unanswered longing into a legacy for others.

1. I pleaded at that timeא.

Deuteronomy 3:23-24 says: I pleaded with HaShem at that time: my Lord Elohim, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand. Verse 25: let me cross over, please, and see the good land beyond the Jordan, this good mountain and the Lebanon.

Moshe asks not for power or reward but to see. He begins with praise: "you have begun to show". He describes his life's experience as only a beginning. We note the humility and longing in the request without adding emotions the text does not name.

2. Enough for youב.

Deuteronomy 3:26 says: HaShem was angry with me because of you and did not listen to me; HaShem said to me: enough for you; do not speak to me any more about this matter.

The answer is no, and Moshe is asked to stop asking. The words "rav lach", enough for you, echo the words Moshe once heard from Korach, "rav lachem". We offer that echo as a reading. What follows in the parashah is not silence but teaching: Moshe turns from his own request to the people's future.

3. Do not forgetג.

Deuteronomy 4:9 says: only guard yourself and guard your soul very much, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; and make them known to your children and your children's children.

Memory is treated as something that must be guarded "very much". The antidote to forgetting is teaching: to children and grandchildren. As our application, what we have seen is preserved best when we pass it on.

4. Hear, Yisraelד.

Deuteronomy 6:4 says: hear, Yisrael, HaShem is our God, HaShem is one. Verse 5: you shall love HaShem your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. Verses 6-7: these words shall be on your heart; teach them to your children and speak of them when you sit at home, walk on the way, lie down, and rise up.

The Shema is the central declaration of Jewish faith, recited daily; its halakhic and kabbalistic dimensions are vast and beyond our scope. Within this lesson we note only its placement: it is taught by a leader who was told he would not enter the land, and it is designed to accompany the people everywhere, at home and on the way.

5. What we hold ontoה.

Our passages move from a plea, to a refusal, to a warning against forgetting, to words meant to be carried into every home and road. Moshe cannot go where he longs to go, but his words will.

So what do we hold onto when our deepest request is refused? These verses suggest: the honesty of having asked, the memory of what we have seen, and the teaching we can pass to those who will go further than we can. The exercise for this week is to recite the Shema slowly once with the awareness that its words were taught by someone who did not receive what he asked for.
