The guiding question

How does a leader speak at the end of a long road?

Learning objective

To read the opening of Moshe's address, his recollection of the burden of leadership, and his charge to the judges, and to ask how memory, shared responsibility, and fairness shape a final teaching.

1. These are the wordsא.

Deuteronomy 1:1 says: these are the words that Moshe spoke to all Yisrael across the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the Aravah, opposite Suf, between Paran and Tofel and Lavan and Chatzerot and Di-Zahav.

The man who once said "I am not a man of words" now opens a book called "Words". The place names have been read by the tradition as allusions to events of the journey; we leave that reading in its sources. We note that the address is to "all Yisrael", the whole people at once.

2. I cannot carry you aloneב.

Deuteronomy 1:9 says Moshe told them at that time: I cannot carry you by myself. Verse 10 says HaShem your God has multiplied you, and you are today like the stars of heaven in number.

The people's growth, a fulfillment of blessing, is also the reason the burden is too heavy for one person. Moshe names his limit openly. As our reflection, success can create the need to share responsibility, and saying "I cannot alone" is part of good leadership.

3. A thousand times as manyג.

Deuteronomy 1:11 says: may HaShem, God of your fathers, add to you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you as he spoke to you. Verse 12: how can I carry by myself your trouble, your burden, and your strife?

Moshe blesses the people with even more growth in the same breath that he admits he cannot carry them. He does not wish them smaller to make his task easier. The word "eichah", how, in verse 12 is read publicly in a mournful tune in some traditions; we only note the tension between blessing and burden.

4. Do not fear any manד.

Deuteronomy 1:16 says Moshe charged the judges: hear between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother and his stranger. Verse 17: do not show favor in judgment; hear the small and the great alike; do not fear any man, for judgment belongs to Elohim; and a matter too hard for you, bring to me.

The charge begins with listening, "hear", before judging. It includes the stranger, insists on equal hearing for small and great, and frees the judge from fear. It also provides a path for hard cases. As our application, fair judgment requires listening first, courage, and the humility to bring hard questions to someone else.

5. Speaking at the endה.

Our passages show a leader addressing the whole people, admitting his limits, blessing them beyond his own capacity, and passing on standards of fairness to others. The final voice is not self-centered; it prepares others to carry what he cannot.

So how does a leader speak at the end of a long road? These verses suggest: to everyone, honestly about limits, generously in blessing, and with care to hand on what matters. The exercise for this week is to think of a responsibility you carry alone and consider whom you could prepare to share it.

  1. Why might the people's growth make leadership harder?
  2. What does it mean that the charge to the judges begins with 'hear'?
  3. Which responsibility could you begin to share?
