The guiding question

Why might the Torah choose a song to carry its message into the future?

Learning objective

Read the opening of Ha'azinu, the image of teaching as rain, the declaration of HaShem's perfect justice, the call to ask the elders, the eagle stirring its nest, and Moshe's closing words, and ask how poetry carries memory, rebuke, and tenderness at once.

A royal poem

Ha'azinu is a song. In the Torah scroll it is written in two columns, set apart from the prose around it. Moshe was told to write it as a witness; now he sings it to the people.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Ha'azinu, set at Tiferet in Maqam Hijaz, a royal poem. It is the closest the Torah comes to the work of our song cycle, and we read it with special attention to its images. We read five passages.

1. My teaching shall drop as rainא.

Deuteronomy 32:1-2 says, give ear, heavens, and I will speak, and let the earth hear the words of my mouth. My teaching shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as gentle rain upon the grass and as showers upon the herb.

Teaching is compared to rain and dew, to gentle drops on grass. Different listeners receive it differently, as different plants receive rain. As our reflection, a song does not force its message; it lets it fall softly and soak in over time.

2. The Rock, his work is perfectב.

Deuteronomy 32:4 says, the Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice; a God of faithfulness and without iniquity, righteous and upright is he.

This verse opens the Tzidduk HaDin said at Jewish burials in many communities. It declares justice where the mourner may not understand it. We mention the custom as practice. As our reading, the song's faith is not naive; it is spoken also at the hardest moments.

3. Ask your fatherג.

Deuteronomy 32:7 says, remember the days of old, consider the years of generation after generation; ask your father and he will tell you, your elders and they will say to you.

The song sends its listeners to the generations before them. Memory is not only read; it is asked of fathers and elders. As our application, a song can open a conversation between generations rather than replacing it.

4. As an eagle stirs its nestד.

Deuteronomy 32:10-11 says, he found him in a desert land, in the waste, a howling wilderness; he surrounded him, he cared for him, he guarded him as the pupil of his eye. As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreads its wings, takes them, and carries them on its pinions.

In the middle of a song of rebuke stands an image of tenderness: the pupil of the eye, an eagle over its young. We note the echo of the eagles' wings at Sinai as a reading. As our reflection, a royal song holds rebuke and tenderness together, as the parashah of Devarim did.

5. It is your lifeה.

Deuteronomy 32:46-47 says that Moshe said, set your hearts to all the words which I testify against you today, which you shall command your children to keep, to do all the words of this Torah. For it is not an empty thing for you, for it is your life.

After the song, Moshe adds a prose sentence: it is not an empty thing for you; it is your life. The song is meant to be lived, not only sung. As our reading, the measure of a song's success is what its listeners do afterward.

A song to live byשיר לחיות בו

Our passages show what a song can carry: teaching that falls gently, faith spoken even at a grave, a conversation between generations, tenderness inside rebuke, and a demand that it be lived. The Torah chose a song as its witness.

This week, listen to or sing one song from our cycle, and choose one line from it that you will try to live in the coming days. Then ask an older person what they remember of the song or verse.
