The guiding question

How does a leader hand over what he has carried?

Learning objective

Read Moshe's acknowledgment of his limits, his encouragement of the people and of Yehoshua, the commandment of Hakhel, and the command to write the song, and ask how a humble farewell turns into continuity.

A humble farewell

Vayelech is one of the shortest parashiyot. Moshe, now one hundred and twenty, speaks of his limits, encourages his successor, and arranges for the Torah to be read and remembered after him. It is a farewell without drama.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Vayelech, set at Hod in Maqam Bayat, a humble farewell. We read five passages.

1. I can no longer go out and come inא.

Deuteronomy 31:1-2 says, Moshe went and spoke these words to all Yisrael, and said to them, I am one hundred and twenty years old today; I can no longer go out and come in, and HaShem has said to me, you shall not cross this Jordan.

Moshe goes to the people rather than calling them to him, and he states his limits plainly. Where he was going is not said, and interpreters have filled the gap in various ways. As our reading, a humble farewell begins with naming what one can no longer do.

2. Be strong and courageousב.

Deuteronomy 31:6 says, be strong and courageous, do not fear and do not be terrified before them, for HaShem your God is the one who goes with you; he will not fail you nor forsake you.

The leader who can no longer go with them tells the people who will go with them. As our reflection, a humble farewell redirects the people's trust away from the departing leader toward a presence that does not leave.

3. Before the eyes of all Yisraelג.

Deuteronomy 31:7-8 says that Moshe called Yehoshua and said to him before the eyes of all Yisrael, be strong and courageous, for you shall come with this people into the land. HaShem is the one who goes before you; he will be with you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.

The succession is public: before the eyes of all Yisrael. Moshe gives his successor the same encouragement he gave the people. As our application, handing over well means strengthening the next leader openly, so that the people see the trust being passed on.

4. Gather the peopleד.

Deuteronomy 31:12-13 says, gather the people, the men, the women, the little ones, and your stranger who is in your gates, that they may hear and learn and fear HaShem your God and be careful to do all the words of this Torah; and their children who have not known shall hear and learn.

Before leaving, Moshe establishes a gathering for the reading of the Torah, held in the year after the Shemitah. Our Sukkot songs treat Hakhel in detail. The gathering includes children who have not known. As our reading, a farewell secures not the leader's memory but the Torah's transmission.

5. Write for yourselves this songה.

Deuteronomy 31:19 says, and now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the children of Yisrael; put it in their mouths, so that this song may be a witness for me among the children of Yisrael.

The final instrument of continuity is a song placed in the mouth. Rambam counts the commandment for each person to write a Torah scroll, deriving it from this verse; we cite that in general terms. For a cycle of songs like ours, it is a striking thought: a song is chosen as a witness.

Handing onלמסור הלאה

Our passages show a humble farewell: limits named plainly, trust redirected to a lasting presence, a successor strengthened in public, a gathering established for the Torah, and a song placed in the people's mouth.

This week, think of one responsibility you will one day hand over. Name the person who could carry it, and encourage them openly. Teach someone one song or verse you want to remain after you.
