How do we build a life of mitzvot on gratitude and memory?
Read the bringing of first fruits with its declaration, the shared rejoicing, Moshe's words about becoming a people, and his remark on the heart to know, and ask how gratitude and understanding form a foundation for building mitzvot.
Building mitzvot
Ki Tavo begins with the first act a farmer performs in the land: bringing the first fruits with a declaration of memory. It continues with blessings and warnings and ends with Moshe's reflection on understanding. Its first image is a basket held out in gratitude.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Ki Tavo, set at Yesod in Maqam Ajam, the building of mitzvot on a warm foundation. Ajam is the secondary Maqam of Yesod in our mapping, chosen here for the warmth of gratitude. We read five passages.
1. From the first of all the fruitא.
Deuteronomy 26:1-2 says, when you come into the land which HaShem your God gives you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it, you shall take from the first of all the fruit of the ground, put it in a basket, and go to the place which HaShem your God will choose.
The first of the fruit is brought before anything is enjoyed. The farmer travels with it to the chosen place. As our reflection, gratitude is placed at the beginning, not at the end, of a new life in the land.
2. My father was a wandering Arameanב.
Deuteronomy 26:5 says, and you shall answer and say before HaShem your God: an Aramean was destroying my father, and he went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and he became there a great, mighty, and numerous nation.
The phrase arami oved avi has two well-known readings: my father was a wandering Aramean, and an Aramean sought to destroy my father; the Haggadah of Pesach follows the second. We present both. In either reading, the farmer recites a history of vulnerability while holding a full basket.
3. Rejoice with all the goodג.
Deuteronomy 26:11 says, and you shall rejoice in all the good which HaShem your God has given you and your household, you, the Levite, and the stranger who is in your midst.
After memory comes joy, and the joy includes the Levite and the stranger. The farmer who remembers that his father was a stranger now rejoices with the stranger in his midst. As our reading, gratitude rooted in memory naturally widens the circle of joy.
4. This day you have become a peopleד.
Deuteronomy 27:9 says that Moshe and the priests the Levites spoke to all Yisrael, saying, be silent and hear, Yisrael: this day you have become a people to HaShem your God.
After forty years, the people are told, this day you have become a people. Many have read this as a call to feel each day as the day of the covenant. We offer that as a reading. Becoming a people is described as something that happens today, not only in the past.
5. A heart to knowה.
Deuteronomy 29:3 says, but HaShem has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, until this day.
After all the wonders of forty years, Moshe says that understanding comes only now, until this day. Understanding takes time to grow. As our reflection, the foundation of mitzvot is built not only by experience but by the slow ripening of a heart that knows.
Gratitude as foundation
Our passages build a foundation: first fruits given first, a history of vulnerability told over a full basket, joy shared with the stranger, a people formed today, and a heart that comes to know in its time.
This week, take the first part of something you receive, a salary, a harvest, a success, and give it with a sentence of memory about where you came from. Share the joy with someone who is a stranger among you.
