How does a life of holiness show itself in small, everyday obligations?
Read a selection of the many laws of Ki Tetzei, returning lost objects, sending away the mother bird, building a parapet, paying wages on time, leaving the forgotten sheaf, and keeping honest weights, and ask what a humble collection of mitzvot teaches about daily responsibility.
A humble collection
Ki Tetzei contains more commandments than any other parashah in the Torah. Many are small and practical: animals, roofs, wages, scales. The parashah is a portrait of holiness in the details of ordinary life.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Ki Tetzei, set at Hod in Maqam Bayat, a humble collection of mitzvot. We read six short passages and keep their halakhic details aside.
1. You may not hide yourselfא.
Deuteronomy 22:1-3 says, you shall not see your brother's ox or sheep straying and hide yourself from them; you shall surely return them to your brother. And so you shall do with every lost thing of your brother; you may not hide yourself.
The final phrase, you may not hide yourself, turns a law into a description of character. The person who sees is responsible because they saw. As our reading, holiness begins with refusing to look away.
2. Send away the motherב.
Deuteronomy 22:6-7 says, if you come across a bird's nest on the way, with young ones or eggs, and the mother sitting on them, do not take the mother with the young; you shall surely send away the mother and take the young for yourself, that it may be well with you and you may prolong your days.
This small law carries the same promise of long life given for honoring parents, a parallel many have noted. Its reasons have been debated, and we do not decide them. We note only that a seemingly minor act receives a great promise.
3. A parapet for your roofג.
Deuteronomy 22:8 says, when you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you do not bring blood upon your house if anyone falls from it.
Responsibility here is preventive: build the barrier before anyone falls. The owner is responsible for dangers in what they create. As our application, part of a humble holiness is noticing in advance where others might be hurt by what we build.
4. On the same dayד.
Deuteronomy 24:14-15 says, you shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your brothers or one of the strangers in your land. On his day you shall give him his wage, and the sun shall not set upon it, for he is poor and he sets his soul upon it.
The verse explains the urgency from the worker's side: he sets his soul upon it. For a poor person, a delay is not a small matter. As our reading, a just employer sees the wage through the eyes of the one waiting for it.
5. The forgotten sheafה.
Deuteronomy 24:19 says, when you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to take it; it shall be for the stranger, the orphan, and the widow, so that HaShem your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
This mitzvah can only be fulfilled by forgetting. A blessing is attached to an act no one planned. As our reflection, even our oversights can be turned toward others when we decide not to go back and take everything.
6. A full and just weightו.
Deuteronomy 25:13-15 says, you shall not have in your bag two kinds of weights, a large and a small; you shall have a full and just weight, a full and just measure, that your days may be prolonged on the land.
Honesty in commerce receives the same promise of long days as the mother bird and as honoring parents. The verse forbids even having two weights in one's bag. As our reading, integrity begins before the act, with what we carry.
Holiness in the details
Our passages show a humble holiness: not looking away, sparing a mother bird, building a parapet, paying the poor on time, leaving the forgotten sheaf, and carrying only honest weights. None is dramatic; together they shape a life.
This week, pay one bill or debt to someone who works for you before it is due. And check one place in your life where a parapet is missing: a danger to others that you can prevent now.
