What does it mean to choose, and how is a good choice expressed toward others?
Read the setting of blessing and curse before the people, the laws of opening the hand to the needy, and the inclusive joy of the festivals, and ask how a royal choice becomes generosity and shared celebration.
A royal choice
Re'eh opens with a single word addressed to each person: see. Before the people lie two paths. The rest of the parashah shows what choosing the path of blessing looks like in practice: in the treatment of the poor and in the way festivals are celebrated.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Re'eh, set at Tiferet in Maqam Rast, a royal and balanced choice. We read four passages.
1. Blessing and curseא.
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 says, see, I set before you today blessing and curse: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of HaShem your God which I command you today, and the curse, if you do not listen and turn aside from the way.
The word see is in the singular, while you is in the plural. Interpreters have noted that the choice is set before the whole people and before each person. We offer this as a reading. Rambam in his laws of Teshuvah builds on the freedom of choice; we cite that only in general terms.
2. Open your handב.
Deuteronomy 15:7-8 says, if there is among you a poor man, one of your brothers, in any of your gates, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother; but you shall surely open your hand to him and surely lend him sufficient for his need.
The verse addresses both the heart and the hand: do not harden one, do not shut the other. And it measures help by the need of the poor, sufficient for his need. As our reading, the choice of blessing becomes visible first in an open hand.
3. Let your heart not be grievedג.
Deuteronomy 15:10-11 says, you shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, for because of this HaShem your God will bless you. For the poor will not cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, you shall surely open your hand to your brother, to your poor and needy in your land.
The command reaches the giver's feelings: give, and do not let your heart be grieved. And it is realistic: the poor will not cease. As our reflection, generosity is not a single solution but a lasting practice, and the manner of giving matters as much as the gift.
4. All who are in your gatesד.
Deuteronomy 16:14-15 says, you shall rejoice in your festival, you, your son, your daughter, your servant, your maidservant, the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow who are in your gates. Seven days you shall celebrate, and you shall be altogether joyful.
The list of those who rejoice includes the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. Rambam teaches in his laws of festivals that one who eats and drinks with his family and shuts the door on the poor does not have joy of mitzvah; we cite it in general terms. As our reading, festive joy is measured by who is included.
Choosing blessing
Our passages show a choice set before each person, expressed in an open hand, a heart that gives without grief, an ongoing generosity, and a joy that includes the stranger, the orphan, and the widow.
This week, before the next Shabbat or festival, invite one person who would otherwise be alone. When you give, notice your heart, and give in a way that does not grieve it.
