The guiding question

How does gratitude change the way we hold what we have?

Learning objective

Read the lesson of the manna, the blessing after eating, the warning against self-congratulation, the summary of what is asked, and the love of the stranger, and ask how a warm bond with Torah expresses itself in gratitude and generosity.

A warm bond with Torah

Eikev speaks to a people about to enter a land of plenty. Its concern is not hunger but satiety: what happens to memory and gratitude when life becomes comfortable. Its answer combines blessing, humility, and love.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Eikev, set at Chesed in Maqam Ajam, the warm and open measure of kindness, the canonical Maqam of Chesed in our cycle. We read five passages.

1. Not by bread aloneא.

Deuteronomy 8:2-3 says, remember all the way HaShem your God led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you. He humbled you, let you hunger, and fed you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers knew, to make you know that a person does not live by bread alone, but by everything that comes from the mouth of HaShem.

The manna is described not only as food but as a lesson: the source of life is more than bread. As our reflection, even daily sustenance can teach dependence and gratitude when it is remembered as a gift.

2. You shall eat and be satisfied and blessב.

Deuteronomy 8:10 says, you shall eat and be satisfied, and you shall bless HaShem your God for the good land he has given you.

This verse is the source of the commandment of Birkat HaMazon, the blessing after meals. Blessing comes after satisfaction, precisely when need is no longer felt. As our reading, gratitude is tested most when we are full.

3. My strength and my handג.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 says, and you say in your heart, my strength and the might of my hand made me this wealth. But remember HaShem your God, for it is he who gives you strength to make wealth, in order to establish his covenant.

The verse does not deny human effort; it says the strength to make wealth is given. And wealth has a purpose: to establish a covenant. As our reflection, holding success with gratitude means remembering both who gave the strength and what the success is for.

4. What does HaShem ask of you?ד.

Deuteronomy 10:12 says, and now, Yisrael, what does HaShem your God ask of you, but to fear HaShem your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, and to serve HaShem your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

The question is framed as if the demand were small, but the list is large: awe, walking, love, and service with the whole heart. The Talmud discusses this tension in Berachot; we cite it in general terms. As our reading, what is asked is not a single act but a direction for the whole life.

5. You shall love the strangerה.

Deuteronomy 10:18-19 says that HaShem executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him bread and clothing. And you shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Love of the stranger is grounded in an imitation of divine conduct and in memory. The love is concrete: bread and clothing. As our reading, chesed in this parashah is not only a feeling toward HaShem; it is bread given to someone who has none.

Gratitude that gives

Our passages move from the lesson of manna, to blessing when full, to remembering who gave the strength, to a direction for the whole life, to bread and clothing for the stranger. Gratitude here becomes generosity.

This week, say Birkat HaMazon once slowly after a full meal. Then give bread or clothing, directly or through a fund, to someone who is a stranger to you.
