What remains when a prayer is not granted?
Read Moshe's plea to enter the land and its refusal, the warning not to forget, the promise to those who seek, and the Shema, and ask how love and faithfulness continue at the highest threshold, even after a no.
Moshe's highest plea
Va'etchanan begins with a prayer that is refused and continues with the most famous words of Jewish faith. The same parashah holds Moshe's personal disappointment and the call to love with all the heart.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Va'etchanan, set at Keter in Maqam Saba, Moshe's highest plea. In the source text of the Shema below, the divine name appears as אֲדֹנָי, as in the example of our song-writing instructions. We read four passages.
1. Let me cross overא.
Deuteronomy 3:23-26 says, I pleaded with HaShem at that time, saying: you have begun to show your servant your greatness. Let me cross over, please, and see the good land beyond the Jordan. But HaShem was angry with me because of you and did not listen to me, and said, enough for you; do not speak to me any more about this matter.
Moshe tells the people about his own unanswered prayer. He does not hide the refusal or his disappointment. As our reflection, a teacher who shares a prayer that was not granted gives permission to those who listen to pray honestly, even without the answer they want.
2. Lest you forgetב.
Deuteronomy 4:9 says, only guard yourself and guard your soul carefully, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; and make them known to your children and your children's children.
Memory is described as something that must be guarded, like a soul. What the eyes saw can depart from the heart, and the remedy is to teach it to children and grandchildren. As our reading, transmission is one of the ways memory guards itself.
3. If you seek with all your heartג.
Deuteronomy 4:29 says, and from there you will seek HaShem your God, and you will find him, if you search for him with all your heart and with all your soul.
The word from there refers to exile, described in the verses before. Even from the furthest place, seeking is possible. As our reflection, a refused prayer and a distant place do not close the way; seeking with the whole heart remains open.
4. Hear, Yisraelד.
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 says, hear, Yisrael, HaShem is our God, HaShem is one. And you shall love HaShem your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. These words which I command you today shall be on your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your children.
The command to love comes from a man who was just refused his dearest wish. We note this placement as a reading: love with all the heart is taught by one who did not receive what he asked for. The laws of reciting the Shema are many, and we do not treat them here.
Love after a noאהבה אחרי לא
Our passages hold a refused plea, a warning to guard memory, a promise that seeking is possible from far away, and the call to love with all the heart. At the highest threshold, faithfulness continues after a no.
This week, say the Shema once slowly, with attention to the word all. Then think of one request in your life that was not granted, and name one way you can still love and serve with what you have.
