The guiding question

How does a leader speak at the end of a long road?

Learning objective

Read the opening of Moshe's address, his explanation of the Torah, his memory of the people's burden, the charge to judges, and the image of being carried, and ask how a balanced voice combines honesty, instruction, and tenderness.

The royal voice of Moshe

The fifth book of the Torah is largely spoken by Moshe in his own voice. The man who once said he was not a man of words now speaks for most of a book. Devarim opens the last weeks of his life.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Devarim, set at Tiferet in Maqam Rast, the royal and balanced voice of Moshe. We read five passages from his first address.

1. These are the wordsא.

Deuteronomy 1:1 says, these are the words that Moshe spoke to all Yisrael across the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the Aravah, opposite Suf, between Paran and Tofel, Lavan, Chatzerot, and Di Zahav.

The place names in this verse have been read by tradition as hints to past failures, spoken gently, without naming the events. We present this as a known reading. As our reflection, a leader can recall the past honestly while protecting the dignity of those he addresses.

2. Moshe began to explainב.

Deuteronomy 1:5 says, across the Jordan, in the land of Moav, Moshe began to explain this Torah, saying.

Moshe's task here is not only to repeat but to explain. The verb be'er, to make clear, describes teaching for a new generation that did not stand at Sinai. As our reading, the voice of Devarim is a teacher's voice, adjusting the Torah to its listeners without changing it.

3. How can I bear alone?ג.

Deuteronomy 1:12 says, how can I bear alone your trouble, your burden, and your strife?

The word eichah, how, opens this verse, and many communities read it in the melody of the book of Eichah, since Parashat Devarim is read before Tisha b'Av. We mention the custom as practice. Moshe admits the limit of his strength, and the following verses describe sharing the burden with appointed leaders.

4. Do not be afraid of any manד.

Deuteronomy 1:16-17 says, I charged your judges at that time, saying, hear between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother and his stranger. Do not show partiality in judgment; hear the small and the great alike; do not be afraid of any man, for the judgment belongs to Elohim.

The charge begins with hearing and includes the stranger. Small and great are heard alike, and the judge is told not to fear any person, because judgment belongs to Elohim. As our reading, a balanced voice listens equally and speaks without fear.

5. As a man carries his sonה.

Deuteronomy 1:31 says, and in the wilderness, where you saw how HaShem your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.

In the middle of a speech that recalls failures, Moshe uses the image of a father carrying his son. Honesty and tenderness are held together. As our reflection, a voice that rebukes may still remind its listeners that they were carried the whole way.

A balanced voice

Our passages show a voice at the end of a road: gentle in recalling the past, clear in explaining, honest about its limits, fair in judgment, and tender in remembering how the people were carried.

This week, when you must remind someone of a past failure, do it as Moshe did in the opening verse: gently, without humiliation. And in the same conversation, remind them of a time they were carried.

  1. What is the difference between repeating the Torah and explaining it?
  2. Why might Moshe admit "how can I bear alone"?
  3. How can rebuke and tenderness be held in one speech?
