Why remember every station of a long journey?

Learning objective

Read the record of the journeys, the cities of refuge, the warning not to pollute the land, and the closing verse of Bamidbar, and ask how memory, refuge, and the sanctity of life form a foundation for life in the land.

The foundation of the path

Masei, the last parashah of Bamidbar, begins with a list of forty-two places. Many are unknown, and some recall painful events. The Torah takes the trouble to record them all before the people enter the land.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Masei, set at Yesod in Maqam Saba, the foundation of the path. We read four passages that close the book of the wilderness.

1. Moshe wrote their goings outא.

Numbers 33:1-2 says, these are the journeys of the children of Yisrael who went out of the land of Egypt by their hosts, under the hand of Moshe and Aharon. And Moshe wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the word of HaShem, and these are their journeys according to their goings out.

Verse 2 says the same thing twice in reverse order: goings out to journeys, journeys to goings out. Interpreters have read meaning in the reversal; we leave that open. We note that the journey is written down at its end, as a record to be kept.

2. Cities of refugeב.

Numbers 35:11-12 says, you shall designate for yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you, that a manslayer who kills a person unintentionally may flee there; and the cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, so that the manslayer does not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

Before the people enter the land, it is given places of refuge, so that anger does not replace judgment. Someone who caused death unintentionally is protected until a court decides. As our reading, a just society needs places where passion cannot reach before due process does.

3. Do not pollute the landג.

Numbers 35:33-34 says, you shall not pollute the land in which you are, for blood pollutes the land, and the land cannot be atoned for the blood shed in it except by the blood of the one who shed it. You shall not make impure the land in which you dwell, in the midst of which I dwell, for I HaShem dwell in the midst of the children of Yisrael.

The sanctity of human life is tied to the sanctity of the land and to the presence dwelling there. The laws of judgment in these verses belong to a court, not to individuals, and we do not draw practical rulings from them. As our reflection, the way a society protects life shapes the holiness of the place it lives in.

4. In the plains of Moavד.

Numbers 36:13 closes the book: these are the commandments and the judgments that HaShem commanded by the hand of Moshe to the children of Yisrael in the plains of Moav by the Jordan at Yericho.

The book of the wilderness ends at the edge of the land, by the Jordan, facing Yericho. The journey is recorded, refuge is established, and the people stand at a border. As our reading, a foundation for the next stage is laid before crossing it.

Remembering the wayלזכור את הדרך

Our passages lay a foundation at the end of a long road: a written record of every station, places of refuge so that judgment precedes anger, the sanctity of life tied to the land, and a people standing at the border with what they have learned.

As the book of Bamidbar closes, write down the stations of one journey in your own life, including the hard ones. Then name one place of refuge you can offer someone: a space where they will not be judged in anger.

  1. Why might the Torah record every station, even the painful ones?
  2. What do cities of refuge protect, besides the manslayer?
  3. How is the holiness of a place tied to the way life is protected in it?
