How do our words and commitments form a foundation for shared life?
Read the law of vows and the negotiation with the tribes of Gad and Reuven as a study in the foundation of commitments, and ask what it means to keep one's word and be clean in the eyes of others.
The foundation of the path
Matot stands near the end of the journey in the wilderness. It begins with vows and ends with an agreement between Moshe and two tribes. Both concern words that bind, and what makes a commitment trustworthy.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Matot, set at Yesod in Maqam Saba, the foundation of the path. The halakhot of vows are detailed and are not our subject; we read four passages for their teaching about commitment.
1. He shall not profane his wordא.
Numbers 30:2-3 says that Moshe spoke to the heads of the tribes: this is the thing HaShem has commanded. When a man makes a vow to HaShem or swears an oath to bind himself, he shall not profane his word; according to all that comes out of his mouth he shall do.
A word can be profaned. The verse treats speech as something with holiness that can be violated. As our reflection, the foundation of trust between people begins with doing what came out of one's mouth. Sephardic practice is cautious about making vows at all, and many add bli neder; we mention this as practice, not as a ruling.
2. Shall your brothers go to war?ב.
Numbers 32:5-6 says that the children of Gad and Reuven asked, if we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a holding; do not bring us across the Jordan. And Moshe said, shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
Moshe's first response is a question about solidarity, not about land. The request is not refused outright; it is tested by its effect on others. As our reading, a personal choice in a community must answer the question: what does it mean for my brothers?
3. Pens for our flocks, towns for our childrenג.
Numbers 32:16-18 says that they came near and said, we will build pens for our flocks here and towns for our little ones, and we will arm ourselves and go before the children of Yisrael until we bring them to their place; we will not return to our homes until each has received his inheritance.
In their proposal, the flocks are mentioned before the children. In Moshe's answer in verse 24, the order is reversed: build towns for your little ones and pens for your sheep. Many readers have noted the change; we offer it as a reading about priorities.
4. Clean before HaShem and Yisraelד.
Numbers 32:20-22 says that Moshe answered, if you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before HaShem for war, and every armed man of you crosses the Jordan until the land is subdued, then afterward you shall return and be clean before HaShem and before Yisrael, and this land shall be yours as a holding.
The phrase clean before HaShem and before Yisrael joins two standards: what is right before heaven and what is seen as right by people. As our reading, integrity in shared life includes being clean in the eyes of the community, not only in one's own conscience.
Commitments as foundation
Our passages show commitments as a foundation: a word that must not be profaned, a personal request tested by solidarity, priorities placed in the right order, and a standard of being clean before HaShem and before people.
This week, review one promise you made and have not yet kept, and keep it. Before making a new commitment, ask what it means for those around you, and how it will look to them.

- Why might Moshe's first response be a question about brothers rather than land?
- Why is it not enough to be clean before HaShem without being clean before Yisrael?
