How is intense devotion turned into a lasting order of peace?
Read the covenant of peace given to Pinchas, the request of the daughters of Tzelofchad, Moshe's request for a successor, and the daily offering, and ask how zeal at a threshold is followed by justice, succession, and steady practice.
Zeal at the threshold
Pinchas opens with the reward for a violent act of zeal, recounted at the end of the previous parashah. The act is unique and dangerous, and tradition has hedged it with strict limits. The parashah itself moves quickly from zeal to peace, inheritance, succession, and daily offerings.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Pinchas, set at Gevurah in Maqam Saba, zeal at the threshold. This lesson does not present zeal as a model for personal action; it reads the verses and follows where the parashah leads. We read four passages.
1. My covenant of peaceא.
Numbers 25:11-12 says, Pinchas son of Elazar son of Aharon the priest turned my wrath away from the children of Yisrael by being zealous for my sake among them, so that I did not consume them in my zeal. Therefore say, behold, I give him my covenant of peace.
The reward for zeal is a covenant of peace. In the Torah scroll, the letter vav in the word shalom is written broken, a feature interpreters have discussed; our cited text does not show it. As our reading, the parashah directs the reader from zeal toward peace as its goal.
2. Why should our father's name be lost?ב.
Numbers 27:1-4 says that the daughters of Tzelofchad, Machlah, Noa, Choglah, Milkah, and Tirtzah, came near and stood before Moshe, Elazar the priest, the princes, and all the congregation, and said, our father died in the wilderness and had no sons; why should our father's name be taken away from his family? Give us a holding among our father's brothers.
Five women stand before the whole leadership and ask a question the law had not yet addressed. In the following verses Moshe brings their case before HaShem, and their claim is affirmed. As our reading, in the same parashah, a different kind of courage appears: lawful, public, and seeking justice.
3. Not like sheep without a shepherdג.
Numbers 27:15-17 says that Moshe spoke to HaShem, saying, let HaShem, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, who will go out before them and come in before them, so that the congregation of HaShem will not be like sheep that have no shepherd.
Having heard that he will not enter the land, Moshe asks not for himself but for a successor. He again uses the title God of the spirits of all flesh. As our reflection, a leader's concern for continuity after him is a form of care for the people.
4. Each day, continuallyד.
Numbers 28:2-4 says, command the children of Yisrael: my offering, my bread, you shall be careful to offer to me in its appointed time. Two yearling lambs without blemish each day, a continual burnt offering; one lamb in the morning and the second at twilight.
After zeal, justice, and succession, the parashah turns to the most regular service of all: morning and evening, every day. Sephardic siddurim include the parashah of the Tamid in the morning prayers, and our Korbanot songs set it to music. As our reading, the extraordinary moment is followed by the ordinary, faithful one.
From zeal to steadiness
Our passages move from zeal rewarded with a covenant of peace, to women seeking justice through law, to a leader asking for a successor, to an offering brought every morning and evening. Devotion is shaped into peace, justice, continuity, and steady practice.
This week, take one passion of yours and give it a steady, daily form: a morning and an evening act. If you see an injustice, raise it as the daughters did, openly and before those responsible.
