What does it take to see a people as they truly are?
Read the opening of Bilam's eyes, his first and third blessings, and his vision of a star from Yaakov as a study in royal seeing, and ask how a hostile gaze can be turned into blessing.
Royal seeing
Balak is told almost entirely from outside the camp. A king and a seer look down on Yisrael from the heights, intending a curse. The parashah is about how they see, and how their seeing is changed.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Balak, set at Tiferet in Maqam Rast, a royal seeing. We read four passages and keep the messianic reading of the last one carefully marked as a reading.
1. HaShem opened his eyesא.
Numbers 22:31 says that HaShem uncovered the eyes of Bilam, and he saw the angel of HaShem standing in the way with his sword drawn in his hand, and he bowed and prostrated himself on his face.
The seer who is hired for his vision is the last to see what stands in his way; his donkey saw it first. As our reading, the parashah begins by humbling the one who claims to see, and only afterward lets him see truly.
2. A people dwelling aloneב.
Numbers 23:9 says, for from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him; behold, a people that dwells alone, and is not reckoned among the nations.
The first blessing describes distinctness from a distance. The phrase dwelling alone has been read as a blessing, as a burden, and as both. We do not choose. We note that the observer sees from the heights and names what he sees, without yet coming near.
3. How goodly are your tentsג.
Numbers 24:5 says, how goodly are your tents, Yaakov, your dwellings, Yisrael.
By the third blessing, the gaze has moved from distant rocks to tents and dwellings, to the homes of the people. This verse is said by many upon entering a synagogue. As our reflection, true seeing comes close enough to notice how people live.
4. A star from Yaakovד.
Numbers 24:17 says, I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star shall come forth from Yaakov, and a scepter shall rise from Yisrael.
The vision looks to a future not now and not near. Rambam, in the laws of kings, reads this passage as a prophecy of Maschiach ben David; we cite the work by name only. As our reading, the seer who came to curse ends by seeing a king in the far future of the people.
From curse to blessing
Our passages trace a gaze transformed: from blindness to opened eyes, from distant rocks to near tents, and from the present to a future king. Royal seeing, in this reading, is seeing a people as they are and as they may become.
This week, choose someone you tend to see from a distance or with suspicion. Come close enough to notice one good thing about how they live, and say it aloud as a blessing.
