The guiding question

How do we live with what we cannot fully understand, in law and in loss?

Learning objective

Read the statute of the red heifer, the death of Miriam and the lack of water, Moshe's striking of the rock, the copper serpent, and the song of the well, and ask how understanding works at its limits.

The mystery of purification

Chukat opens with a statute that tradition has regarded as the hardest to understand, and continues with losses: Miriam, then Aharon, and a decree upon Moshe. Understanding in this parashah is tested by law and by grief.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Chukat, set at Binah in Maqam Bayat, the mystery of purification. We read five passages and do not claim to explain the statute.

1. This is the statuteא.

Numbers 19:2 says, this is the statute of the Torah which HaShem has commanded, saying, speak to the children of Yisrael that they take for you a red heifer, without blemish, in which there is no defect, and upon which no yoke has come.

The verse calls this the statute of the Torah, not of the heifer. Interpreters have discussed why, and many have described it as a law whose reason is hidden. We do not offer a reason. As our reflection, understanding includes knowing where it reaches its limit, and keeping faith there.

2. Miriam died thereב.

Numbers 20:1-2 says that the children of Yisrael came to the wilderness of Tzin, and Miriam died there and was buried there. And there was no water for the congregation, and they assembled against Moshe and Aharon.

The death of Miriam is recorded in a single short clause, and the next verse says there was no water. The Talmud connects the well of the wilderness with Miriam's merit; we mention this as a known teaching, cited generally. The text sets loss and thirst side by side.

3. Speak to the rockג.

Numbers 20:10-12 says that Moshe and Aharon gathered the assembly before the rock, and Moshe said, listen now, you rebels, shall we bring forth water for you from this rock? Moshe raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, and much water came out. And HaShem said, because you did not trust in me to sanctify me before the children of Yisrael, you shall not bring this assembly into the land.

What exactly was Moshe's failure has been explained in many ways: the striking, the words, the anger. We do not decide. We note only that this scene follows directly upon Miriam's death, and that the text does not hide the cost even for the greatest leader.

4. Look and liveד.

Numbers 21:8-9 says, make for yourself a serpent and set it on a pole, and whoever is bitten and looks at it shall live. Moshe made a serpent of copper and set it on a pole, and whenever a serpent bit a man, he would look at the copper serpent and live.

Healing comes through looking. The Mishnah in Rosh Hashanah asks whether a serpent gives life, and answers that when Yisrael looked upward and directed their hearts to their Father in heaven they were healed; we cite this by tractate only. As our reading, the object points beyond itself.

5. Rise up, O wellה.

Numbers 21:17 says, then Yisrael sang this song: rise up, O well, sing to it.

The words then Yisrael sang echo the song at the sea, where it was Moshe and the children of Yisrael who sang. Here the people sing on their own, after a season of losses. We note the echo as a reading: understanding at its limits can still lead to song.

Understanding at its limits

Our passages hold a statute whose reason is hidden, a loss followed by thirst, a leader's failure whose nature is debated, a healing through looking upward, and a song from the people. Understanding here does not explain everything; it keeps faith and continues.

This week, name one thing you do not understand, in the Torah or in your life, and resist explaining it away. Write it down with one practice you will keep regardless.
