When does a dispute become destructive, and what can stop its harm?
Read Korach's claim, Moshe and Aharon's plea, Aharon's standing between the dead and the living, and the blossoming staff, and ask how strictness and mercy meet in a crisis of authority.
Strictness in a crisis
Korach is a parashah of rebellion and severe judgment. Its opening argument sounds attractive, the whole congregation is holy, and its outcome is catastrophe. Between them stand acts of intercession that stop the harm from spreading.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Korach, set at Gevurah in Maqam Hijaz, the strictness of judgment. We read four passages and look for what stops a destructive dispute.
1. All of them are holyא.
Numbers 16:3 says that they assembled against Moshe and Aharon and said to them, you take too much upon yourselves, for all the congregation, all of them are holy, and HaShem is in their midst; why then do you raise yourselves above the assembly of HaShem?
The claim echoes the call of Kedoshim and the promise of a holy nation. That is why it is dangerous: true words can be used to serve a struggle for power. The Mishnah in Avot names the dispute of Korach and his company as the example of a dispute not for the sake of Heaven; we cite this in general terms.
2. Shall one man sin?ב.
Numbers 16:22 says that Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces and said, God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin and you be angry with all the congregation?
The leaders under attack plead for the very congregation that gathered against them. They address God as the God of the spirits of all flesh, a title that recognizes each person. As our reading, in a crisis of authority, protecting the many from the guilt of the few is part of leadership.
3. Between the dead and the livingג.
Numbers 17:12-13 says that Aharon took the incense as Moshe had spoken and ran into the midst of the assembly, and behold, the plague had begun among the people; he put on the incense and atoned for the people. He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.
The incense that brought death to the rebels earlier in the story now stops a plague. Aharon runs into the midst of the people and stands in the space between. We note the contrast as a reading. As our application, someone who stands between can stop harm from spreading.
4. A staff that blossomsד.
Numbers 17:23 says that on the next day Moshe came into the Tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aharon for the house of Levi had sprouted; it brought forth buds, blossomed, and produced almonds.
After fire, earth, and plague, the final sign is a dry staff that blossoms. The dispute is settled not by another punishment but by a sign of life. As our reflection, the end of a destructive dispute may come through something that grows.
Stopping the harm
Our passages show a destructive dispute built on true-sounding words, leaders who plead for the many, a priest who stands between the dead and the living, and a sign of life that ends the conflict.
This week, in one disagreement around you, ask whether it is for the sake of Heaven or for position. If you can, stand between, not to win, but to stop the harm from spreading.
Keep the conversation going
- Why might a claim that sounds true become dangerous?
- What does it mean to stand "between the dead and the living"?
- Why might the dispute end with a blossoming staff rather than another punishment?
