The guiding question

What sustains a leader and a people through the uncertainty of the road?

Learning objective

Read the lighting of the lamps, the journeys by the cloud, the song of the ark, Moshe's wish for all to be prophets, and the description of his humility, and ask how a sheltered splendor carries a people through hard journeys.

A sheltered splendor

Beha'alotcha begins with light and ends with complaint and its aftermath. The people leave Sinai, the journey becomes hard, and even Moshe's family speaks against him. Through it all, the parashah describes Moshe as the humblest of men.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Beha'alotcha, set at Hod in Maqam Nahawand, a splendor sheltered and tender. We read five passages.

1. Toward the face of the menorahא.

Numbers 8:2-3 says, speak to Aharon and say to him, when you raise the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light toward the face of the menorah. And Aharon did so; he raised its lamps toward the face of the menorah, as HaShem had commanded Moshe.

The lamps are turned toward the center of the menorah, and the text notes that Aharon did so, exactly. Many readers have praised the faithfulness implied in and Aharon did so. As our reflection, light that faces a shared center gathers rather than scatters.

2. By the word they journeyedב.

Numbers 9:17-18 says, whenever the cloud was lifted from the tent, the children of Yisrael journeyed, and in the place where the cloud rested, there they camped. By the word of HaShem they journeyed and by the word of HaShem they camped.

The people do not know in advance how long they will stay. Surrounding verses describe stays of days, a month, or a year. As our application, trust on the road includes accepting that the timing of rest and departure is not always ours to set.

3. Rise up, HaShemג.

Numbers 10:35-36 says, when the ark set out, Moshe would say, rise up, HaShem, and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee from before you. And when it rested he would say, return, HaShem, to the myriads of thousands of Yisrael.

These two verses are marked off in the Masoretic text by special signs, a feature discussed in the Talmud; our cited text does not reproduce them. They are said in many communities when the Torah scroll is taken out and returned. Departure and rest each receive words.

4. Would that all were prophetsד.

Numbers 11:29 records Moshe's answer when Yehoshua asks him to restrain two men prophesying in the camp: are you zealous for my sake? Would that all the people of HaShem were prophets, that HaShem would put his spirit upon them.

In the middle of a crisis of leadership, Moshe wishes that others would share his gift rather than protecting his position. As our reading, a humble leader is glad when the spirit rests on others too.

5. Very humbleה.

Numbers 12:3 says, and the man Moshe was very humble, more than any person on the face of the earth. Verse 13 records that when his sister is stricken, Moshe cries to HaShem, please, God, heal her, please.

The description of Moshe's humility appears just when he is spoken against, and his response to his sister's suffering is a five-word prayer for her. As our reflection, humility here is shown not in self-abasement but in the absence of resentment and in prayer for the one who wronged him.

Light for the journey

Our passages show what sustains a people on the road: light turned toward a shared center, trust in the timing of the cloud, words for departure and rest, a leader glad to share the spirit, and humility that prays for those who wrong it.

This week, find one person whose gift you could encourage rather than guard against. And if someone has spoken against you, try to say one short prayer or good word for them.
