The guiding question

How is blessing carried by people who do not own it?

Learning objective

Read the law of confession and restitution, the priestly blessing, and the voice heard from between the cherubim as a humble splendor, and ask how blessing passes through human beings without becoming theirs.

A humble splendor

Naso is the longest parashah in the Torah. It contains laws of the camp, the nazir, the blessing of the priests, and the long, repeated gifts of the princes. In the middle stand three short verses of blessing.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Naso, set at Hod in Maqam Bayat, a humble splendor. Many of our songs close with a Berachah; here we read the Torah's own blessing and three passages around it.

1. Confession and restitutionא.

Numbers 5:6-7 says, when a man or woman commits any of the sins of people, acting unfaithfully against HaShem, and that person is guilty, they shall confess the sin they have done, and he shall restore the principal of his guilt, add a fifth to it, and give it to the one he wronged.

A wrong against a person is called unfaithfulness against HaShem, and its repair has two parts: words and restitution. Confession alone is not enough; something is returned, with more added. As our reading, humility before HaShem is expressed in what is given back to a human being.

2. Thus shall you blessב.

Numbers 6:23-27 says, speak to Aharon and his sons, saying, thus shall you bless the children of Yisrael: may HaShem bless you and keep you; may HaShem shine his face toward you and be gracious to you; may HaShem lift his face toward you and grant you peace. And they shall put my name upon the children of Yisrael, and I will bless them.

The priests speak the words, yet the last verse says, and I will bless them. The blessing passes through the priests without belonging to them. In the source text below, the divine name in the blessing appears as אֲדֹנָי, following our standing practice; the priestly blessing in the synagogue has its own laws, which we do not address here.

3. The voice speaking to himג.

Numbers 7:89 says, when Moshe came into the Tent of Meeting to speak with him, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the cover that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim, and he spoke to him.

After twelve repeated accounts of the princes' gifts, the parashah closes with a voice, heard from the place promised in Terumah. We note the link to Exodus 25:22 as a reading. Gifts and blessing lead to listening.

Carriers of blessing

Our passages show blessing carried humbly: repair that gives back more than was taken, priests whose words are not their own, and a leader who comes to listen. Splendor here belongs to the source, and people are its carriers.

This week, if you owe someone a repair, add something to what you return. And on Friday evening, if it is your custom, bless your children or someone close to you, aware that you are carrying a blessing rather than owning it.

  1. Why might a wrong against a person be called unfaithfulness against HaShem?
  2. What does "and I will bless them" teach the priests about their role?
  3. Why might the longest parashah end with a voice?
