What changes when we hold the ground beneath us as entrusted rather than owned?
Read the laws of the Shemitah, the Yovel, the land that cannot be sold permanently, and the support of a brother who falters, as a foundation of holiness in the ground itself, and ask how ownership is limited by a greater claim.
A foundation in the ground
Behar opens at Mount Sinai and speaks about the land. It is one of the few parashiyot whose laws reach the soil, debts, and ownership directly. Holiness here is measured in fields and years.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Behar, set at Yesod in Maqam Saba, holiness as the foundation of the ground. The practical laws of Shemitah today are a subject of halakhic rulings that we do not address here. We read four passages.
1. A Shabbat for the landא.
Leviticus 25:2-4 says, when you come into the land that I give you, the land shall rest a Shabbat to HaShem. Six years you shall sow your field and prune your vineyard, but in the seventh year there shall be a Shabbat of complete rest for the land; you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.
The land itself keeps a Shabbat, and the verse calls it a Shabbat to HaShem. The rhythm of rest given to people in time is extended to the ground. As our reflection, what we work is not only material for our use; it too has a rhythm to be respected.
2. Proclaim libertyב.
Leviticus 25:10 says, you shall sanctify the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants; it shall be a Yovel for you, and each of you shall return to his holding, and each of you shall return to his family.
Liberty in this verse means return: to one's holding and to one's family. The Yovel undoes accumulated loss and gives each household a new beginning. As our reading, freedom here is not only release from something but return to where one belongs.
3. The land is mineג.
Leviticus 25:23 says, the land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is mine, for you are strangers and residents with me.
Avraham once called himself a stranger and a resident among the children of Chet. Here the whole people is called strangers and residents, with me. Ownership is real but limited by a greater claim. We note the echo of Genesis 23:4 as a reading.
4. When your brother faltersד.
Leviticus 25:35-36 says, if your brother becomes poor and his hand falters beside you, you shall support him, as a stranger and resident, and he shall live with you. Do not take interest or increase from him, and fear your God, and let your brother live with you.
The verse asks to support someone when his hand falters, before he falls entirely. The phrase and he shall live with you appears twice. As our application, help given early, while a person can still stand, may be the most dignified form of support.
Held in trust
Our passages build holiness into the ground: a Shabbat for the land, a liberty that returns people to where they belong, a land that cannot be sold forever, and a brother held up before he falls. Ownership is limited by a greater claim and by care for one another.
This week, give one thing you own a rest: a device, a garden, a busy room. And find one person whose hand is faltering, and offer support before it becomes a fall.

- What does it mean for the land itself to keep a Shabbat?
- Why might liberty in the Yovel mean returning home?
- What changes if we see ourselves as "strangers and residents" in what we own?
