The guiding question

How do appointed times shape a people's year and its conduct toward others?

Learning objective

Read the call to sanctify the Name, the opening of the festival calendar, the counting toward Shavuot, the law of gleanings within the festival chapter, and the joy of Sukkot, and ask how holy time is joined to care for others.

Royal appointed times

Parashat Emor contains the full cycle of the festivals in Leviticus 23. It moves through Shabbat, Pesach, the counting, Shavuot, the first of the seventh month, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. Time itself becomes a structure of holiness.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Emor, set at Tiferet in Maqam Rast, the royal harmony of the appointed times. Our festival songs treat each Chag; here we read five passages and look at the shape of the year as a whole.

1. I shall be sanctifiedא.

Leviticus 22:32 says, you shall not profane my holy name, and I shall be sanctified in the midst of the children of Yisrael; I am HaShem who sanctifies you.

Sanctification is described as happening in the midst of the people. Rambam, in the laws of the foundations of the Torah, treats this verse as the source of the commandment to sanctify the Name; we cite the work in general terms. Our reading: the conduct of a people among others is part of its holiness.

2. These are my appointed timesב.

Leviticus 23:2-3 says, speak to the children of Yisrael and say to them, the appointed times of HaShem which you shall proclaim as holy convocations, these are my appointed times. Six days work shall be done, and on the seventh day is a Shabbat of complete rest, a holy convocation.

The appointed times are called both my appointed times and times which you shall proclaim. Holy time is given and also called out by the people. And the list begins with Shabbat, the weekly rhythm under the yearly one.

3. You shall countג.

Leviticus 23:15-16 says, you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Shabbat, from the day you bring the omer of waving, seven complete weeks; until the day after the seventh week you shall count fifty days, and offer a new meal offering to HaShem.

The meaning of the day after the Shabbat was disputed in antiquity, and the rabbinic tradition reads it as the day after the first day of Pesach; we note this without entering the dispute. Our reflection: between two festivals the Torah places counting, so that each day is noticed on the way.

4. In the middle of the festivalsד.

Leviticus 23:22 says, when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not finish the corner of your field as you reap, nor gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger; I am HaShem your God.

In the middle of the chapter of festivals, between Shavuot and the seventh month, stands a law for the poor and the stranger. The placement has been noticed by many readers. As our reading, the calendar of holiness includes a pause to remember those who have no harvest of their own.

5. You shall rejoiceה.

Leviticus 23:40 says, you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of a goodly tree, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before HaShem your God seven days.

The year's cycle in this chapter closes with joy commanded before HaShem. Our Sukkot songs deal with the four species and their laws in detail; here we note only that joy, like counting and rest, is given a defined time.

A year with a shape

Our passages show holy time with a shape: sanctifying the Name among people, appointed times given and proclaimed, days counted one by one, a pause for the poor in the middle of the calendar, and joy with a time of its own.

This week, before the next appointed time in your calendar, set aside one gift for someone who has no harvest of their own. And count the days until that time, noticing each one.

  1. Why might the appointed times be both "mine" and "which you shall proclaim"?
  2. What does the law of gleanings add to a chapter of festivals?
  3. Why might joy need a defined time?
