Where does holiness live, in rare heights or in ordinary conduct?
Read the call to holiness and a selection of the laws that follow as a humble, practical holiness, and ask how great words are translated into concrete acts toward others.
A humble holiness
Parashat Kedoshim opens with the highest demand, you shall be holy, and then turns to fields, wages, the deaf and the blind, neighbors and elders. The parashah places holiness in the middle of daily life.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Kedoshim, set at Hod in Maqam Bayat, a humble holiness. We read five passages from Leviticus 19.
1. You shall be holyא.
Leviticus 19:2 says, speak to all the congregation of the children of Yisrael and say to them, you shall be holy, for I HaShem your God am holy.
The call is addressed to all the congregation, not to priests alone. Many commentators have asked what exactly is meant by holiness here, and we do not decide. What the chapter shows is how the call is unfolded: in specific laws, many of them about other people.
2. The corner of the fieldב.
Leviticus 19:9-10 says, when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not finish the corner of your field, nor gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall not glean your vineyard, nor gather its fallen grapes; you shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger.
The first concrete form of holiness in our selection is something not done: not finishing, not gathering everything. Holiness here is an incompleteness left on purpose, so that others may live from it. As our reflection, a holy life may include deliberate edges left for others.
3. Before the blindג.
Leviticus 19:14 says, you shall not curse the deaf, and before the blind you shall not put a stumbling block, and you shall fear your God; I am HaShem.
Both prohibitions concern people who would not know what was done to them: the deaf does not hear the curse, the blind does not see the obstacle. The verse adds, you shall fear your God. As our reading, holiness is tested where no one can see or hear but HaShem.
4. Rebuke and loveד.
Leviticus 19:17-18 says, you shall not hate your brother in your heart; you shall surely rebuke your fellow, and not bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance nor bear a grudge against the children of your people, and you shall love your fellow as yourself; I am HaShem.
Love your fellow as yourself is preceded by a sequence: do not hate in your heart, speak honestly instead, do not take revenge, do not hold a grudge. In our reading, love here is not only a feeling; it is a path that passes through honest speech and letting go.
5. Rise before the agedה.
Leviticus 19:32 says, before the gray-haired you shall rise, and you shall honor the face of the elder, and you shall fear your God; I am HaShem.
Holiness here is a bodily gesture: to rise. Again the verse adds, you shall fear your God. As our application, a small, visible act of respect may carry the weight of the whole chapter's call.
Holiness in ordinary conduct
Our passages unfold a great call into small acts: leaving edges for others, protecting those who cannot see or hear, speaking honestly instead of hating, letting go instead of avenging, and rising before the aged.
This week, choose one corner to leave: time, money, or attention set aside for someone else. And choose one person you have held something against, and either speak to them honestly or let it go.
