What makes atonement possible, and what does it ask of the one who seeks it?
Read the opening of Leviticus 16, the high priest alone in the tent, the confession over the goat, the promise of the day, and the call to live by the laws as a sequence at the highest threshold of atonement.
The highest threshold of atonement
Acharei Mot contains the service of Yom Kippur. It opens with a reminder of the death of Aharon's sons, and it ends with laws of holiness in daily life. The service of the holiest day stands between grief and ordinary conduct.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Acharei Mot, set at Keter in Maqam Saba, the highest threshold of atonement. Our Yom Kippur songs treat the Avodah in detail; here we read five verses and ask what they teach about atonement, without describing the service as if it were performed today.
1. After the deathא.
Leviticus 16:1-2 says that HaShem spoke to Moshe after the death of the two sons of Aharon when they drew near before HaShem and died, and said, speak to Aharon your brother, that he not come at all times into the holy place within the curtain, before the cover that is on the ark, so that he not die.
The laws of the holiest day begin with a memory of loss and with a limit: not at all times. Nearness to the holiest place requires a right time. As our reflection, atonement here does not begin by forgetting the past; it begins by remembering it and accepting a boundary.
2. No one in the tentב.
Leviticus 16:17 says, no person shall be in the Tent of Meeting when he comes to atone in the holy place until he comes out, and he shall atone for himself, for his household, and for all the congregation of Yisrael.
The high priest is alone in the tent, yet he atones for himself, his household, and the whole congregation. The order moves outward from the self. As our reading, standing alone before the holiest moment does not mean standing for oneself only; and atonement for others begins with honesty about oneself.
3. Confession over the goatג.
Leviticus 16:21-22 says that Aharon shall lean both his hands on the head of the living goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Yisrael and all their transgressions in all their sins, and the goat shall carry all their iniquities to a land cut off.
Before the iniquities are carried away, they are named aloud: iniquities, transgressions, sins. Confession precedes release. Rambam places confession at the center of repentance in his laws of Teshuvah; we cite that only in general terms. Our reflection: what is to be let go must first be spoken.
4. Before HaShem you shall be pureד.
Leviticus 16:30 says, for on this day he shall atone for you, to purify you; from all your sins before HaShem you shall be pure.
The verse moves from a day that atones to a people who become pure. The Mishnah at the end of tractate Yoma reads this verse and adds a limit: matters between a person and another are not atoned until one appeases the other. We mention this as a well-known teaching, without quoting its full wording.
5. You shall live by themה.
Leviticus 18:5 says, you shall keep my statutes and my judgments, which a person shall do and live by them; I am HaShem.
After the holiest day comes the law of ordinary life, and its goal is stated as life. The service at the highest threshold is followed by a call to live by the commandments every day. As our reading, atonement is not an escape from life but a return to it.
Atonement and return
Our passages trace atonement: it begins in memory and limits, stands alone and yet for others, names wrongs aloud before letting them go, promises purity, and returns to daily life. The highest threshold leads back to ordinary days.
This week, name in private one wrong you wish to let go of, and speak it aloud. If it concerns another person, take one step to appease them, as the Mishnah teaches, before asking that it be atoned.
