The guiding question

What does it take to bring someone back after a time apart?

Learning objective

Read the purification of the metzora and the laws of the afflicted house as a process of return, and ask what this parashah teaches about the one who goes out, the stages of re-entry, and careful speech.

After separation, return

Parashat Tazria ended with a person dwelling alone outside the camp. Metzora begins with the day of his purification. The parashah describes not only an exit but a return, in careful stages.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Metzora, set at Binah in Maqam Bayat, a maternal understanding of purification and return. We read four passages and keep apart the laws from our reflections on them.

1. The priest goes outא.

Leviticus 14:2-4 says, this shall be the law of the metzora on the day of his purification: he shall be brought to the priest, and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp, and the priest shall look, and behold, the affliction has healed. Then the priest commands that two living clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop be taken for him.

The one who dwelt outside does not have to find his own way back; the priest goes out to him. The first step of return is taken by the one inside. That is our reading of the movement in the verse.

2. A return in stagesב.

Leviticus 14:8 says that the one being purified shall wash his clothes, shave all his hair, and bathe in water, and be pure; afterward he shall come into the camp, but he shall dwell outside his tent seven days.

Return happens in stages: first the camp, then, after seven more days, his own tent. The text does not rush from separation to full belonging. As our application, someone returning after a time apart may need a path with intermediate steps, and a community may need patience with them.

3. Something like an afflictionג.

Leviticus 14:34-35 speaks of an affliction in a house in the land, and says that the owner of the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, something like an affliction has appeared to me in the house.

The owner does not declare; he says, something like an affliction has appeared to me. Interpreters have drawn from this a teaching about cautious speech even regarding what one sees in one's own house. We offer that as a reading: one may report what appears without pronouncing what it is.

4. My Mishkan in their midstד.

Leviticus 15:31 says, you shall separate the children of Yisrael from their impurity, so that they do not die in their impurity when they make impure my Mishkan that is in their midst.

The purpose given for all these laws concerns the sanctuary in the people's midst. Purity is presented as a way of keeping the presence among them. As our reflection, the laws of separation and return serve a shared center, not the exclusion of individuals for its own sake.

Bringing someone backלהשיב אדם

Our passages show a path of return: someone inside goes out first, re-entry comes in stages, speech about what appears is careful, and the whole serves a presence in the people's midst.

This week, think of someone who has been apart from your circle for a time. Be the one who goes out first: a message, a visit, an invitation to one step of return, without demanding that it be complete at once.

  1. Why might the priest go out to the metzora rather than wait for him?
  2. What does a return in stages protect, for the one returning and for the community?
  3. What is the difference between "it is an affliction" and "something like an affliction has appeared to me"?
