The guiding question

What does careful understanding require before a judgment is made?

Learning objective

Read the laws of the woman after childbirth and of the skin affliction as a discipline of attention, patience, and accessibility, and ask what this parashah teaches about understanding before declaring.

A parashah that is hard to read

Tazria is one of the parashiyot readers find most distant. It speaks of birth, of bodily states, and of skin marks examined by a priest. The concepts of purity it uses are not modern medical categories, and we will not treat them as if they were.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Tazria, set at Binah in Maqam Bayat, a maternal understanding and purification. We read five passages and look at how the text slows judgment down.

1. A woman who gives birthא.

Leviticus 12:1-2 begins, speak to the children of Yisrael, saying, a woman who conceives and bears a male child shall be impure seven days. The laws of purity in this book begin with birth.

The status the verse describes is not presented as a moral fault, and readers should not hear it as blame. Interpreters have explained it in many ways. Our narrower observation is that the Torah gives the time after birth a defined shape and an end.

2. An offering within reachב.

Leviticus 12:6 describes the offering the mother brings at the end of her days of purification, a lamb and a young pigeon or turtledove. Verse 8 adds, and if her means do not suffice for a lamb, she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons.

The end of this period is marked by return to the sanctuary, and the path is adjusted to the mother's means. As in Parashat Vayikra, no one is excluded by poverty. Our reading: understanding includes seeing what a person can actually bring.

3. The priest shall lookג.

Leviticus 13:2-3 says that when a person has on the skin of his body a swelling, a scab, or a bright spot, he shall be brought to Aharon the priest or to one of his sons, and the priest shall look at the affliction on the skin, and the priest shall look at him and declare him.

The verse says the priest shall look twice: once at the affliction, once at him. As a reading, we note that the text first looks at the mark and then at the person. The declaration comes only after seeing.

4. Seven days of waitingד.

Leviticus 13:4-5 says that if the spot is white but not deeper than the skin, the priest shall shut him up seven days, and on the seventh day the priest shall look again; if the affliction has stayed as it was, he shall shut him up another seven days.

When the case is unclear, the law does not decide quickly; it waits and looks again, and if needed waits again. As our application, understanding sometimes requires the patience to say, not yet, before declaring anything about another person.

5. He shall dwell aloneה.

Leviticus 13:45-46 says that the afflicted person's clothes shall be torn, his head unkempt, he shall cover his upper lip and call out, impure, impure. All the days the affliction is on him he is impure; he shall dwell alone, outside the camp.

The phrase he shall dwell alone is among the hardest in the parashah. The text defines it as lasting all the days the affliction is on him, not forever. As our reflection, those who live for a time outside the camp are still part of the story that the next parashah will continue.

Understanding before declaring

Our passages show a discipline of understanding: a period with shape and end, a path within reach, looking twice, waiting and looking again, and a separation that is limited in time. Judgment here is slow, careful, and bounded.

This week, when you are about to form a judgment about someone, look twice, once at the issue and once at the person, and if the matter is unclear, say to yourself, not yet, and wait seven days before deciding.

  1. Why might the text say "the priest shall look" twice in one verse?
  2. What does the law of waiting seven days teach about unclear cases?
  3. How can we keep someone who is "outside the camp" within our story?
