How can a covenant hold both consequence and a promise that is never withdrawn?
Read the blessings, the image of walking upright, the confession after hardship, and the promise of an unbroken covenant, and ask how judgment and reward stand together without cancelling the bond.
Judgment and reward
Bechukotai closes the book of Vayikra with blessings and with a long passage of warnings, traditionally read in a low voice. The parashah does not soften the warnings, and it does not end with them.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Bechukotai, set at Gevurah in Maqam Hijaz, judgment and reward. We read five passages and focus on the frame around the warnings rather than on the warnings themselves.
1. Rain in its seasonא.
Leviticus 26:3-4 says, if you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, I will give your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its produce, and the tree of the field shall give its fruit.
The first blessing is not abundance alone but timing: rain in its season. Many interpreters have noted that the verb is to walk in the statutes, suggesting a way of life rather than a single act. We offer both as observations of the wording.
2. Peace in the landב.
Leviticus 26:6 says, I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down with none to make you afraid; I will remove evil beasts from the land, and the sword shall not pass through your land.
After food comes peace, described concretely: lying down without fear. As our reflection, the blessing is measured in the ability to sleep in safety, a simple measure that many people in the world still lack.
3. I broke the bars of your yokeג.
Leviticus 26:12-13 says, I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be my people. I am HaShem your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt from being their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk upright.
The highest blessing in this section is presence and dignity: walking among the people, and enabling them to walk upright. The word komemiyut is found in the Birkat HaMazon of many communities in the plea to be led upright to our land; we mention this as a liturgical echo.
4. They shall confessד.
Leviticus 26:40-42 says, they shall confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, and if their uncircumcised heart is humbled, then I will remember my covenant with Yaakov, and also my covenant with Yitzchak, and also my covenant with Avraham I will remember, and I will remember the land.
After the hardest warnings comes confession, and after confession the fathers are named in reverse order, Yaakov, Yitzchak, Avraham, and finally the land. The order has drawn many readings, and we do not decide among them. The structure itself shows that the path back passes through honesty.
5. I will not reject themה.
Leviticus 26:44 says, and yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor abhor them, to destroy them and to break my covenant with them, for I am HaShem their God.
Even in the land of their enemies, the covenant is not broken. The consequence is real, and the bond remains. Our reading is that this is the balance of Gevurah in this parashah: judgment that is serious and a covenant that is not withdrawn.
Consequence and covenant
Our passages frame the warnings with blessings of timing, peace, and dignity, and close them with confession and a covenant not broken. The book of Vayikra ends with the assurance that even judgment takes place within a bond.
As Vayikra closes, choose one relationship in which you must hold someone accountable. Name the consequence honestly, and in the same conversation say clearly that the bond remains.
