The guiding question

What does it mean to complete a work faithfully?

Learning objective

Read the accounting of the Mishkan, the completion of the work, Moshe's blessing, and the cloud of glory as a sequence of royal completion, and ask what transparency, faithfulness, and blessing contribute to finishing well.

A book that ends with presence

The book of Shemot began with slavery and ends with a cloud resting on a sanctuary. Pekudei, its last parashah, is mostly lists and repetitions. Within them lies a question about how great work is completed.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Pekudei, set at Malchut in Maqam Hijaz, the royal completion of the work. We read four passages from the closing chapters of Shemot.

1. An accountingא.

Exodus 38:21 opens, these are the accounts of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of the testimony, which were counted at Moshe's command, the work of the Levites, by the hand of Itamar son of Aharon the priest.

Even a holy project gives an accounting of what was received and how it was used, and the accounting is carried out by someone other than the one who commanded it. As our application, faithfulness in shared work includes transparency, especially where trust has recently been broken.

2. As HaShem commanded, so they didב.

Exodus 39:42-43 says that according to all that HaShem commanded Moshe, so the children of Yisrael did all the work. Moshe saw all the work, and behold, they had done it as HaShem had commanded, so they had done, and Moshe blessed them.

Moshe saw all the work, and behold. The language recalls the seeing of creation in Bereshit, a connection many readers have noted, and we offer it only as a reading. The work is inspected, found faithful, and then blessed. Completion here ends not in pride but in blessing those who did the work.

3. The cloud covered the tentג.

Exodus 40:33-34 says that Moshe completed the work, and the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of HaShem filled the Mishkan.

The human work ends, and then the presence fills the place. The order of the verses separates what people can complete from what they can only receive. Our reflection: finishing well may mean doing one's part fully and then leaving room for what one cannot make.

4. In all their journeysד.

Exodus 40:36-38 says that when the cloud was lifted from the Mishkan, the children of Yisrael would travel in all their journeys, and if it was not lifted they would not travel, for the cloud of HaShem was on the Mishkan by day and fire by night, before the eyes of all the house of Yisrael in all their journeys.

The book ends not at rest but on the road, in all their journeys. The completed sanctuary does not stop the people's movement; it guides it. As our reading, a finished work can become the center of the next journey rather than its end.

Completing faithfully

Our passages show a royal completion: an honest accounting, a work done as commanded and then blessed, a presence that fills what was built, and a journey that continues around the completed center.

As the book of Shemot closes, choose one shared task you are finishing. Give an honest accounting of it to someone, bless those who did it with you by name, and decide what the next journey around it will be.

  1. Why might a holy project need a public accounting?
  2. What is the difference between what we complete and what we can only receive?
  3. Why might the book end "in all their journeys" rather than at rest?
