What turns a crowd into a community that builds together?
Read the gathering of the people, the command of Shabbat, the willing gifts, the appointment of Betzalel, and the surplus of giving as foundations of shared work, and ask how a community recovers its common purpose after failure.
A second gathering
In Ki Tisa the people gathered against Aharon to make a calf. Vayakhel opens with Moshe gathering the whole congregation. The same root, to gather, now leads toward building a sanctuary rather than an idol.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Vayakhel, set at Yesod in Maqam Saba, the foundation of shared work. We read four passages and look for what holds a community together while it builds.
1. Rest before buildingא.
Exodus 35:1-3 says that Moshe gathered the whole congregation of the children of Yisrael and said, these are the things HaShem commanded to do: six days work shall be done, and on the seventh day you shall have holiness, a Shabbat of rest to HaShem. You shall not kindle fire in all your dwellings on the day of Shabbat.
Before the instructions to build begin, the community is reminded of a limit to work. The halakhic connection between Shabbat and the labors of the Mishkan is a large subject which we do not enter here. Our reading is narrower: a community that builds needs a time when it stops building.
2. Every heart that lifted himב.
Exodus 35:21-22 says that every man whose heart lifted him and everyone whose spirit moved him brought HaShem's offering for the work of the Tent of Meeting, and the men came with the women, all who were generous of heart, bringing jewelry of gold.
The verse uses two inner words, a heart that lifted and a spirit that moved, and it includes men and women together. As our reflection, a shared project becomes a community when each person brings something from within, and no one is left as a spectator.
3. Called by nameג.
In Exodus 35:30-31 Moshe says, see, HaShem has called by name Betzalel son of Uri son of Chur of the tribe of Yehuda, and has filled him with a spirit of Elohim, with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, and in all craftsmanship.
The leader of the work is introduced with his father and grandfather and his tribe, and his skill is described as a gift. A craftsman's ability is placed alongside wisdom and understanding. We read this as a dignity given to practical work, without claiming it settles any question about the source of talent.
4. More than enoughד.
Exodus 36:5-7 says that the craftsmen told Moshe, the people are bringing much more than enough for the work; and Moshe commanded that a proclamation pass through the camp that no one should make further offering, and the people were restrained from bringing, for the material was sufficient for all the work, and more.
A people who recently gave gold for a calf now give so much for the sanctuary that they must be told to stop. We note the contrast as a reading across chapters. As our application, recovery after failure may show itself in generosity that needs a limit rather than encouragement.
Foundations of a community
Our passages suggest foundations for a community that builds: a time when building stops, gifts that come from within, skills honored and called by name, and a generosity so full it needs a boundary.
This week, in one shared project, name one person's skill aloud and thank them by name. Then set one boundary on the project: a time when it pauses.
Keep the conversation going
- Why might the command of Shabbat come before the instructions to build?
- What does it mean that the craftsman is "called by name"?
- What does a generosity that must be stopped say about a community?
