The guiding question

What does it mean to draw near, and who is invited to do so?

Learning objective

Read the opening of Vayikra as a foundation for the whole system of offerings, and ask what its language of calling, drawing near, covenant, and accessibility teaches about approaching the holy.

The foundation of the offerings

The book of Vayikra is often felt to be distant, full of animals, fat, and blood. Its first word, however, is a call, and the Hebrew word for offering, korban, shares a root with drawing near. The book begins with an invitation.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Vayikra, set at Yesod in Maqam Saba, the foundation of the offerings. It belongs with our Korbanot songs, and like them it does not claim to restore the Temple service; it reads the verses. We read five passages.

1. He calledא.

Leviticus 1:1 says, and he called to Moshe, and HaShem spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying. The call comes before the speech, and it comes from the tent that the end of Shemot left filled with glory.

The written text of the Torah has a small alef at the end of the first word, a feature discussed by many interpreters; the text we cite here does not mark letter sizes, and we do not build on it. For our purpose, it is enough that the book opens with a personal call before any law.

2. An offering from among youב.

Leviticus 1:2 says, speak to the children of Yisrael and say to them, when a person from among you brings an offering to HaShem, from the animals, from the herd and from the flock you shall bring your offering.

The verse says adam, a person, and the unusual order of the words, an offering from you, has drawn many readings. We note only that the first law of offerings begins with a person who chooses to bring, not with an obligation imposed. Drawing near starts from within.

3. A soul who bringsג.

Leviticus 2:1 begins the meal offering with the words, and when a soul brings a meal offering to HaShem, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it.

For the meal offering of flour and oil, the verse uses nefesh, a soul, rather than adam. Readers have connected this with the modest means of those who bring flour rather than an animal. We present that as a known reading, not as the verse's explicit statement.

4. The salt of the covenantד.

Leviticus 2:13 says, every offering of your meal offering you shall season with salt; you shall not let the salt of the covenant of your God be lacking from your meal offering; on all your offerings you shall offer salt.

Salt preserves and does not spoil, and the verse calls it the salt of the covenant. Many households keep the custom of salt on the table at the blessing over bread, linked by tradition to this verse; we mention it as practice, not as a ruling. As our reflection, every drawing near carries a reminder of an enduring bond.

5. If his means do not sufficeה.

Leviticus 5:7 says, and if his means do not suffice for a lamb, he shall bring as his guilt offering for what he has sinned two turtledoves or two young pigeons to HaShem, one for a sin offering and one for a burnt offering.

The system of offerings adjusts itself to the means of the person. A poorer person is not excluded from atonement; the path is made reachable. As our reading, a foundation for drawing near must leave room for every person, not only for those who can afford the most.

Foundations of drawing near

Our passages lay foundations: a call before any law, an offering that begins with a person's choice, a soul who brings what it can, salt that recalls an enduring covenant, and a path adjusted so that no one is shut out.

This week, when you say a blessing over bread, notice the salt and recall the covenant it stands for. Then ask whether someone near you is shut out of something you take part in, and how the way could be made reachable for them.

  1. Why might the book of offerings begin with a call rather than a law?
  2. What does the use of "soul" for the meal offering suggest?
  3. Where could you make a path of drawing near reachable for someone else?
