The guiding question

How does a people prepare to hear what is beyond it?

Learning objective

Read Yitro's counsel, the invitation of Exodus 19, the scene at the foot of the mountain, and the opening of the Ten Utterances as a progression toward revelation, and ask what kind of readiness revelation calls for.

The highest threshold of revelation

Parashat Yitro contains the revelation at Sinai, yet it bears the name of a priest of Midian and opens with advice about organizing justice. Before the mountain, a guest teaches Moshe how to share a burden.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Yitro, set at Keter in Maqam Saba, the highest threshold of revelation. We read five passages and follow the preparation step by step.

1. It is not goodא.

In Exodus 18:17-18 Moshe's father-in-law says to him, the thing that you are doing is not good. You will surely wear yourself out, both you and this people with you, for the matter is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.

The first not good of the Torah is said of a person alone; here a similar phrase is said of a leader working alone. We note the echo as a reading only. Before receiving the word from above, Moshe accepts a word from a guest, and the burden is shared.

2. Carried on eagles' wingsב.

In Exodus 19:3-4 Moshe goes up to HaElohim, and HaShem calls to him from the mountain: say to the house of Yaakov, you have seen what I did to Egypt, and I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to me.

Before any command, the people are reminded of what they have seen, and the journey is described as being brought to me. Revelation here begins by recalling a relationship. That is our reading of the order of the verses.

3. A kingdom of priestsג.

Exodus 19:5-6 continues, and now, if you will listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be to me a treasure among all the peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

The verse holds two ideas together: a special relationship and a reminder that all the earth belongs to HaShem. Being chosen is set within a universal frame and joined to responsibility. We note this balance without entering the long discussions of its meaning.

4. Standing at the foot of the mountainד.

Exodus 19:16-17 describes the third day: thunder and lightning, a heavy cloud on the mountain, and the sound of a shofar very strong, and all the people in the camp trembled. Moshe brought the people out to meet HaElohim, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

The people tremble and still come out to stand. Awe does not cancel approach here; the text joins them. As our application, readiness may mean standing in place while trembling, rather than waiting until fear disappears.

5. I amה.

Exodus 20:1-3 says that Elohim spoke all these words: I am HaShem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.

The first utterance identifies the speaker through an act of liberation and speaks in the singular, your God, who brought you out. Whether it is a commandment or a preface has been discussed among the commentators, and we do not decide. We note only that the address is personal, even when spoken to a whole people.

Readiness to hear

How does a people prepare to hear what is beyond it? These verses suggest: by sharing burdens, by remembering how it was carried, by accepting responsibility within a covenant, by standing even while trembling, and by hearing a word spoken to all as addressed to oneself.

This week, read the first utterance slowly, as if spoken to you alone. Then name one burden you carry alone that could be shared, and ask for help with it.
