The guiding question

What moves a frightened people from fear to song?

Learning objective

Read the instructions at the sea, the people's seeing and trust, the opening of the Song, Miriam's response, and the first manna as a sequence, and ask how deliverance is received, recognized, and turned into praise and daily trust.

A victory that is sung

Beshalach contains the crossing of the sea and the first great song of the Torah. It also contains complaint, hunger, and a daily test. The song does not end the story; it sits in the middle of it.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Beshalach, set at Tiferet in Maqam Rast, the balanced splendor of a divine victory. We read five passages and follow the path from panic to praise.

1. Stand and see, then travelא.

In Exodus 14:13-14 Moshe tells the people, do not fear; stand firm and see the salvation of HaShem which he will do for you today; HaShem will fight for you, and you shall be silent. Verse 15 follows: why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Yisrael and let them travel.

Interpreters have asked why verse 15 speaks of crying out when no cry is recorded, and we leave that open. The pair of verses offers two movements: first steadiness in place of panic, then forward motion in place of waiting. Our reading is that neither alone is enough.

2. Fear that becomes aweב.

Exodus 14:31 says that Yisrael saw the great hand that HaShem had done against Egypt, and the people feared HaShem, and they trusted in HaShem and in Moshe his servant.

The root of fear appears again, but its object has changed. Earlier Moshe said, do not fear; now the people fear HaShem. Fear of Egypt has become awe. That transformation of one word is our observation across the chapter.

3. Then they sangג.

Exodus 15:1-2 says, then Moshe and the children of Yisrael sang this song to HaShem: I will sing to HaShem, for he is highly exalted; horse and rider he cast into the sea. My strength and song is Yah, and he has become my salvation; this is my God and I will glorify him, the God of my father and I will exalt him.

The song is collective, Moshe and the children of Yisrael, yet its language is personal: my strength, my salvation, my God, my father's God. Praise here joins the individual voice and the voice of the people. That is our reading of the shift in grammatical person.

4. Miriam answers themד.

Exodus 15:20-21 says that Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aharon, took the timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dances, and Miriam answered them, sing to HaShem, for he is highly exalted.

Miriam's words repeat the opening line of the Song, but in the plural imperative, sing. A personal I will sing becomes an invitation to others. As our reading, a song of deliverance is complete when it is answered and taken up by others.

5. Bread for each dayה.

Exodus 16:4 says, behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather each day's portion on its day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in my Torah or not.

After the song at the sea comes a daily test: gather only today's portion. The great moment of trust is followed by the small, repeated trust of each morning. Our reading is that a song is tested not only on the shore but in the ordinary days after it.

The path from fear to song

Our passages trace a path: steadiness, then movement, then seeing, then fear transformed into awe and trust, then song, then an answer from others, then daily trust. Song does not come first, and it does not come last.

Ask which step you are on now after a frightening time, and do not demand of yourself a song before its time. If you are ready, sing or say one line of thanks this week in the presence of someone who can answer it.

  1. Why might the first instruction at the sea be to stand still and be silent?
  2. What does Miriam add by turning "I will sing" into "sing"?
  3. Why might the manna, a daily test, follow so closely after the song?
