How does liberation become a story we keep telling?
Read the first commandment of the calendar, the instructions for answering children, and the night of watching as a framework that turns one event of liberation into an ongoing practice of memory.
A royal liberation
Bo contains the last plagues and the night of the exodus. Yet much of its text looks forward: to a calendar, to children's questions, to a night kept for generations. The parashah tells a liberation and at the same time teaches how it will be told.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Bo, set at Malchut in Maqam Hijaz, a royal liberation made manifest. We read five passages and follow how freedom is given a place in time, in speech, and in the year.
1. Light in their dwellingsא.
Exodus 10:23 describes the plague of darkness: people could not see one another, and no one rose from his place for three days, but all the children of Yisrael had light in their dwellings.
The darkness is described socially: people could not see one another and could not rise. The light is described domestically: in their dwellings. We offer, as a reading only, that freedom begins where people can again see one another and the home becomes a place of light.
2. This month is for youב.
Exodus 12:1-2 records HaShem speaking to Moshe and Aharon in the land of Egypt: this month shall be for you the head of months; it is the first for you of the months of the year. Before the people leave, they receive a way of counting time.
The command is given in the land of Egypt, while the people are still enslaved, and the word for you appears twice. As our reflection, freedom here begins by receiving one's own time, even before one's own place.
3. When your children askג.
Exodus 12:26-27 anticipates a future scene: when your children say to you, what is this service to you, you shall say, it is a Pesach offering to HaShem, who passed over the houses of the children of Yisrael in Egypt. And the people bowed and prostrated.
The verse assumes that children will ask. Their question is treated as an occasion prepared for, not as a disturbance. The people's bowing comes right after this instruction; our reading is that the prospect of a curious next generation is itself received as part of the redemption.
4. A night of watchingד.
Exodus 12:42 calls this a night of watching for HaShem, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; this night is for HaShem a watching for all the children of Yisrael throughout their generations.
The same word, watching, describes both what was done for the people and what the people will keep for generations. As our reading, a night of liberation becomes a night of guarding memory. The halakhic details of the Seder night are not our subject here.
5. You shall tell your childה.
Exodus 13:8 says, you shall tell your son on that day: it is because of this that HaShem acted for me when I came out of Egypt. The telling is in the first person, for me, when I came out.
Here the telling does not wait for a question, and the one who tells speaks as a participant. As our application, freedom remains alive when each generation can say for me about a story it did not personally witness.
A story that continues
Our passages move from light in the dwellings, to a calendar given in slavery, to a question anticipated, to a night kept for generations, and to a first-person telling. None of them is the exodus itself; all of them concern how it is carried forward.
This week, tell one story of deliverance from your own family or community to someone younger, in the first person. Afterward, invite one question and answer it.

- Why might the first commandment to the people concern time rather than place?
